I ordered a pair of Gemsound 3955 Power Amps last week.
They are rated for 1400 watts RMS into 4 ohms bridged.
I THOUGHT the FTC regulated RMS power ratings so amp makers didn't LIE.
I just wanted some cheap power for my pair of 4 ohm subs.
THEN, I started thinking, my subs are 4 ohms, meaning my bridged amps will SEE 2 ohms ?
The place I am getting these from will refund my money IF they dont work,
But HOW can any company get away with lying about RMS ratings ?
Peak power is one thing, but these are rated RMS.
Isn't RMS regulated by the FTC ?
Hey, I would LOVE a Crown K2 ....
But these are JUST for the subwoofers.
My kids get 1000 watt car stereo amps cheap.
WHY cant an amp company give us good, cheap honest power ?
Anyone ever had a Gemsound Amp on a bench ?
DO they Lie ??
Follow Ups:
Never had one on a bench, but have been warned by those older and wiser than I to stay away from anything gemsound
There is really no such thing as RMS power.
A snippet from the Rane Pro Audio Reference:
"rms power No such thing. A misnomer, or application of a wrong name. There is no such thing as "rms power." Average or apparent power is calculated using rms values but that does not equal "rms power;" it equals continuous sine wave power output into a resistive load."
There is no FFC mandate for truth. No two manufacturers are going to agree on the method either. Manufacturers just have to provide a rating that passes UL. That's about it.
If you have a calculator, it is pretty easy to figure out the truth.
BTW, bass is the most demanding thing for an amp. So when you say this is just for sub woofers, you really have the wrong idea. These crap amps do not have good slew rate. They do have good damping factors. Good damping is needed for proper woofer cone control. This particular amp from what I have seen is not rated for 2 ohms. It will likely not last. The way that the specs read, it is a cheapo design. Instead of increasing power when the impedence drops, it actually drops in power by half. Who knows what their distortion is like.
As for Crown, a K2 would not be my first or last choice for an amp. Those things had so many problems. They were huge EMF emitters. That's one of the reasons that they were sealed up tight. Crown improved on the technology with the CE3000. But still, if you want a real sub amp, you need something that generates some current and uses a real power supply.
If you need something cheap, buy used. If you time it right, you can catch the cycle of bands selling gear, musicians having babies and getting married, etc.
LOL! You got EXACTLY what you paid for. Gemsound is crap. Now learn your lesson from this. Want decent pro-sound amps? Think Crown, Crest, Lab Gruppen, QSC makes some decent product as well.
I'll give up my pair of Crown Macro-Tech 2402's I play out with when they peel my cold dead hands from them.
Best,

My mother-in-law, after seeing the Levinson 33H amps in my listening room: "Those are the nicest electric room heaters I've ever seen".
Overstock.com had not shipped yet, so I cancelled !
Thanks Otari !
Good move on your part. Look to your local C/L and the used music stores. There are plenty of good pro amps out there for reasonable cost that'll hit your subs well.

Hint:Look for a BGW 750C on EPay -- a great amp!
Here ya go

Need honest 1000 watts into 4 ohms ?
