For those who have lost thumb drive functionality after deletions, look up for the following files in the folders where u moved them to, & restore them back ( this can also be done temporarily till u load music from the thumb drive & the files can then be deleted again if u feel they effect the Sonics )...
Anything that starts with 'hid'
Anything starting with 'usb'
And the file which was deleted from c:\windows\inf\INFCACHE.1
After completing almost all the file deletions, I am still able to use my thumb drive exactly like how it was with a clean install of xp. Please note that I had also not deleted any file or entry that had to do with 'smartcard'. I have no idea if it has anything to do with USB, but I preferred not to take chances , & reserve it's removal in the End if needed...

There must be different versions of xp. I finally got my way back to cut & paste and having cmp recognize thumb drives.Requirements for cut and paste : rpcns4, rpcss, rsfsaps,rshx32,rsmps all dll's. It could be this subset is smaller I just haven't narrowed it further.
Requirements for recognizing thumb drives: wshatm.dll, wshbth.dll, fs_rec.sys, mcd.sys.
I left the inf folder deleted and all works fine.
Go figure maybe the files can be further narrowed but I'm done after looking for a solution the old fashioned way ... hard work(restoring files 5-7 at a time to see if it fixes the problem).
The last few days demonstrated what functions I need and it isn't keyboard. It mouse, cut & paste and recognizing thumb drives.
Edit: changed file name for thumb drive functionality correct file is fs_rec not imapi....

A friend of mine is Still unable to use pen drive even after restoring those 4 files u specified. Are they cumulatively related to the files u have chosen for 'cut n paste' to work, or are they independent of each other?? Have u restored the 4 files after restoring the files for cut-n-paste??

I did the cut and paste 1st then the thumb drive.
Thumb drive Still does not work even after restoring all files..
Junaid
Your restorations didn't work either?
No. He still gets the "Disk not formatted" error..!!

One thing I did do cut/paste files then the wshatm and wshbth then lastly the 2 files Fs_rec and mcd as a set. Rebooting after each set of deletions.
Dont know if it makes a differnce but there it is.
What level of other deletions has he done (e.g., Steppe 1-20, My Tweak 1...)?
Yes he is done with all deletions. He could cut 'n' paste but thumb drive doesn't function. It shows up in My Computer but Not formatted error as usual..!!
Junaid
Did he reboot?
When I restored these files I just put them into Windows not back into a folder called inf. Should I try that instead? Is that how you did it?
Re-create the c:\ windows\inf folder & put back the INFCACHE.1 as well as everything to do with USB..

still does not work. Since I lost this function in My Tweak page 5 I'm going to try to restore those files. Think there was only 11 or so.
Hope u get it to work asap...
How's the sound at this stage ??

I restored all the filoes (17 of them) from page 5 of My Tweak and I can now cut & paste ok but cmp does not recognize thumb drive. Still get a 'Do you want to format the disk' error message.
even though I restored the files mentioned...sonics are still very good.
Ok I narrowed down the cut & paste function to a small group of dll's: rpcn4,rpcss, rsfaps, rshx32. When I put these files back in cmp boots faster and cut & paste is restored. The process I used was restore 5-7 files reboot see if I fix the problem and it worked well for the cut & paste function. However when I used this process to find why I could not get thumb drives or my esata docking station to work I ran into weird results.I restored 8 drivers from my temp folder beginning with wshatm through drmk and I got a no boot. Put acpiec through drmk.sys back into the temp folder still no boot. So I restored wshatm, wshbth and so since this was where I was before it should boot ....but still no boot ...very weird. All I can figure is that is that some interaction between rpcn4... and wshatm...is going on or the order of file deletes is important or I goofed up somewhere. . Anyway I restored my last good os disc file for all the tweaks through My tweak 2 and I'm back in music
but no cut & paste and no thumb drive functionality but it sounds great.

And the file which was deleted from c:\windows\inf\INFCACHE.1
Question do you remember either the name of the file in inf\INFCACHE.1 or in which post it was described (ie My tweak or My Tweak2...?

I'm not too sure which steppe it was, but I vaguely remember it being mentioned in the last set of steppes. We were told to delete the entire inf folder, which actually had the motor to make the thumb drive run. If u have Moved the files elsewhere & not deleted them permanently, then it's quite easy to get hold of it... I think it should be steppe 8.

The inf stuff is in the original My Tweak stuff right near the front. So anyway I put back inf cache stuff but also found some smartcard stuff in inf & I put that back but I still get the disk not formatted response. I did find some usb stuff in the inf folder so I'll try restoring that. Did you restore these as well?Remember to try cut & paste also.
Unfortunately even with the usb files from inf folder restored I still get disc not formatted error message.
edit: I restored hid***.inf files still no luck
