Hello, everybody.
I didn't realize that you would be so quick at implementing tweaks part 7, so this time I decided to post several parts at once.
I'd like to point out, that already part 8 is setting a cardinal question about network capability of your cmp machine. Inmates, you really have to decide if network is an absolute must for you, because from part 8-9 there will be no network. Also, many other functions will be deleted.
The subdivision is purely out of convenience. I'd like to point out, that I have an external hdd in a esata-usb combo box with external power supply (thermaltake silver river 2) with tweaked Windows on it as well as all my music files. I rip on a different computer and transfer now files plugging the hdd into ripping computer's usb. I don't use flac, by the way.
As a good measure of caution I'd recommend to have an ability to install (in case of a blue-screen crash) your main hdd as a slave or secondary master in another computer to return a file you have removed.
This is what I propose to do in part 9:
I'd rather perform everything at once and then reboot, because I had been removing files in a disorderly fashion and, as experience shows, some files bring blue screen crash at one time but go off easily after some other file was removed.
Remove folders: GroupPolicy from windows-system32 and security from Windows root directory
remove file ver.dll from windows-system
other files are mostly from windows-system 32 or windows-system32-drivers.
List of files to remove:
asr_fmt.exe asr_pfu.exe atmadm.exe attrib.exe auditusr.exe autochk.exe (after you remove this file windows will reboot with a funny warning that it cannot find it) autoconv.exe autofmt.exe autolfn.exe cacls.exe cdosys.dll chkdsk.exe cipher.exe comp.exe compact.exe conime.exe convert.exe ctfmon.exe dbghelp.dll ddeshare.exe dfrgfat.exe diantz.exe
dmremote.exe driverquery.exe dumprep.exe dwwin.exe esentutl.exe eudcedit.exe eventcreate.exe eventvwr.exe expand.exe extrac32.exe fc.exe fltMc.exe fontview.exe fsquirt.exe fsutil.exe gpresult.exe gpupdate.exe help.exe hhctrl.ocx hostname.exe iexpress.exe
kbddv.dll kbdkaz.dll kbduk.dll kbdukx.dll kbdusl.dll kbdusr.dll lnkstub.exe lodctr.exe logman.exe LZEXPAND.DLL migpwd.exe netsetup.exe nslookup.exe ntsd.exe pifmgr.dll pjlmon.dll polstore.dll powrprof.dll prflbmsg.dll proquota.exe psapi.dll psbase.dll
pschdprf.dll pstorec.dll pstorsvc.dll query.dll recover.exe redir.exe regsvr32.exe relog.exe routemon.exe rsopprov.exe rsvp.exe savedump.exe sc.exe sdbinst.exe secedit.exe shrpubw.exe sigverif.exe smlogcfg.dll spiisupd.exe swprv.dll sysocmgr.exe systray.exe
unlodctr.exe unlodctr.exe verifier.exe vssadmin.exe vssvc.exe winscard.dll wowdeb.exe wowexec.exe wscntfy.exe
Serge.
P.S.I want to warn you that at the end of part 9 or 10 you may get a sound that you didn't expect. It may become very detailed but harsh and brittle and not very pleasant. This is not to discourage you. It will all settle to a "relative" bliss in parts 13-14.
In fact the subdivision is only for convenience. It is all one long tweak. I stop from part 12 only when I have achieved some significant (though intermediate it may be) result.
Follow Ups:
If cPlay plays for more than a few minutes I can no longer close it and revert to cMP. I have to restart the system. It never did this before this step. Anyone know what I might restore to cure this? (shutdown.exe has already been restored.)
New one on me. What I do is restore files deleted a few at a time until your function is restored. I recommend to do as ryelands suggests: delete, test, then back up your os disk.
Let me be the first to congratulate Serge on an awesome job, and to thank you for breathing incredible new life into this system.
I went on a marathon and went did 8 thru 12 without stopping to listen. It seemed from the writeup that 12 is a natural plateau. The steps were well laid out. With the exception that many files were marked in use and would not delete, there were no issues. My system is stable and fully functional.
Now for the sound. At 12 the sound is VERY good. In my case a startling improvement. PRAT, attack, balance top to bottom. Relaxed and fluid but very detailed. Very rich but REAL. I spnt about 90 minutes picking off 1 or 2 cuts out of 20 cds. In every case I wanted to stop and listen to the entire cd, but was curious to go on. Normally many of these I have not listened to for months as they were in some way disappointing. At step 12 all but 1 was a winner and I did not want to leave it. I am listening to the music, and not looking for faults in the system.
I am pausing at 12, perhaps forever. It is that good.
Serge you are the man!. Take care of your cat and your cold. Again thankyou.
Hi Serge,
It's quite impressive to see the amount of dedication & hard work u have put in creating all the above. Part 16!!! Phew! Looks like we have a Long way to go. Talking about the Long way, one thing comes to my mind. Why not make things easier & lead us to a short-cut....!!!!!!
By saying that, I mean instead of knowing what files to delete, I feel (since it's gone upto part 16 as of now) that u could guide us with WHAT FILES TO KEEP!! The situation has become such that the system32 & system folder is getting smaller & smaller with every step. So instead of walking all the way through to part 16 & taking the long route, it would be great if u could post a list of files that remain in your system32 & system folder post-part-16. I'm sure the files remaining will be much lesser than the ones to be deleted till we reach part 16. For eg. From steppe 8 to steppe 16, if we need to delete say 300 dll files, & post that only 50-60 remain, then we could drag the needed ones to one side in their respective folder & highlight & delete the remaining ones. Just a thought. U know better!!!
I originally posted a technical question but forget it I will figure it out. Take care of yourself and your kitty. Thanks for all the hard work.
Hello, everybody. This is part 8 of the tweaks, that I propose to do.
1. Find and open with notepad file admfiles.ini in system32-group policy-adm. Change inside this file values from 1 to 0 in inetres.adm, wmplayer.adm, conf.adm and wuau.adm. Save, reboot, remove to your temp folder files: inetres.adm and wmplayer.adm if the latter is still there.
2.Remove folders: windows-system32-NPP and from 1033- file dwintl.dll, remove file winhlp32.exe, folder windows-setup and clear windows-temp from everything. From windows-system32-config-system profile-templates remove everything, Windows-system32-drivers-remove folder ETC. Reboot.
3.Remove these folders (mostly from windows-system32 or windows): Repair, Inf, CSC, Web, debug (but leave file passwd.log), ehome, mui, peernet, pss, resources, provisioning, wbem. In folder pchealth leave only msconfig.exe (go deep inside). from windows-system32-config-systemprofile remove everything IE and Media Player, also remove Remote assistance, narrator, magnify and 0userkeybrd. Reboot.
3.Remove these files: mciole16.dll mmdriver.inf msjetoledb40.dll oleprn.dll setup.exe (windowsNT setup executable), hscsp_w3.cab and pchshell.dll. Don't reboot, but go on and remove these files: SPGRMR.dll all 22 files starting with wdma_ *.inf (that is if you haven't removed the inf folder yet) + wdmaudio.inf and wdmjoy.inf (check your soundcard, but it should work anyway). next remove files: amdk6.sys amdk7.sys arp1394.sys asyncmac.sys atmarpc.sys
atmepvc.sys atmlane.sys atmuni.sys cdfs.sys cdrom.sys fdc.sys flpydisk.sys http.sys irenum.sys modem.sys mqac.sys msfs.sys netbios.sys nic1394.sys nikedrv.sys nmnt.sys p3.sys parport.sys pcmcia.sys ptilink.sys rasacd.sys rio8drv.sys riodrv.sys rootmdm.sys scsiport.sys serenum.sys serial.sys sfloppy.sys smclib.sys tape.sys usbcamd2.sys usbcamd.sys usbintel.sys wanarp.sys.
Reboot. Listen to some music. I hope you will see the difference was worth the trouble.
Now some words about the ongoing tweaks, and how long will it take, and about my humble system.
The tweaks go as long as part 16 with part 10 and 15 being the longest and other parts very short. Part 16 is only 15 files long. I am positively running out of files to remove, and every new find is a treasure, indeed. It should be said, I think, that an opinion that it is enough to remove only dlls and/or sys and exe files that "directly" concern the cmp-cplay process, is slightly incorrect.
Going deeper and deeper into the maze of Windows one starts to see, that though basically very simple, even primitive, it is bound hand and foot with dlls that are patches on patches on patches of some ill-designed services that are unnecessary for OUR purpose. Most are triggered by logon process only to grab the resources and spread triggering threads to other services and so on. Worst of these
files are APIs, and most won't get off easily or at all. Most resources are spent to service security, cryptography and networking. Now I have to warn you that I would retain network ONLY if it is an absolute MUST, otherwise you cannot get too far from here. Also I'd like to attract your attention to two interesting files that are still in your system" winspool.drv and xmlprovi.dll. The can be
removed even now, but wait till you get to part 14-15. Winspool won't allow you to start cmp, but it is SO DIRTY that without it cplay sounds better alone. And xmlprovi.dll will allow for interesting tweaking of sounstage, expanding or flattening it.
Now about my setup. it is the simplest possible: Gigabyte ga g55m-ud 2h mobo 540 processor in zalman hd 160xp+ case with passive cooling from scythe (a flat one to fit into the case), 1 gb of kingston KVR ddr3 memory, zalman heatpipe psu, lynx l22 soundcard. The only hdd is seagate constellation Es with capacity of 2 tb. It was chosen for its durability. It resides in an external esata-usb combo from thermaltake.
Name is silver river 2 smth. Has external psu, Very dirty, so I put it on a different powerline. Everything is fanless, including psu. All tweaks by Cics done. voltage is 0,7.
The soundcard is feeding analog out to $50> Microlab b73 active multimedia speakers, set for near-field. As they don't have xlr inputs, I made xlr-rca adaptors with Oyaide Tunami cable and good connectors. Adaptors cost 3 times more than the speakers.
Speakers are 5,5 feet apart, have 6 feet spare space behind them, early reflections are coped with. I sit 6 feet from the speakers that have a 30 degree studio toe-in. That is all. No network, no ripping, no cdrom, no nothing else.
Somebody said there is a "typical" clutter inside inmates' cmps. No clutter wharsoever. The innards are well placed, only 2 feeding cables from psu. The case is empty. I transfer ripped music by attaching my hdd as a Usb device to the ripping machine and just copy files.
Serge.
Hello, everybody. This is the longest and dullest part. It is as long as all the remaining parts taken together.
1.Remove these folders:
Dr Watson
InstallTemp
and from Windows-WinSxS and deeper inside it (don't touch there anything else!) remove:

Warning! Going on will severely cut the windows' functionality. Also, the sound will become very harsh for some time.
Serge.
For juli@ users and possibly others my cmp/cplay would not work (could not find asio drivers)without setupapi.dll. I put it back in and all was ok.Btw: sonics are outstanding although I prefer 11 but it is indeed brighter.

P.S. You might have noticed that after you have just removed several files, windows is rebooting slowly at first. This is very good. It means, that big changes in sq are going to happen. Though the resolution increases, it may sound sharp or brittle or sybilant for some time.
Check your mouse, keyboard, search function, notepad and explorer. Everything should work.

Like before I needed to restore prodspec.ini and pschdprf.ini to get my asio drivers to inialize for cmp/cplay to work.Sonics (ims) are very good ... not sure its better than 11 but for me they are close. If 14 is not first in sonics it's pretty close so far.

I wonder if someone could come up with a way to do without it?
Interesting that LYNX does not need it. Maybe time to consider trying one of those?

* CMP doesn't react to the absence of taskmanager and loads perfectly. Also, I didn't remove taskill.exe. When I last saw task manager on startup, it showed:
Commit charge (before loading the library titles, but with cicsremote aborted - 20,444 mb, with remote - 22,496, no remote and 700+ titles loaded, OK pressed to close the diagnostics window - 25,628)
Serge.
P.S. Inmates, I know that some of you might have lost your usb flash drive capability. Please, find its dll. I am positively exhausted to return and "search" for it, besides, I don't need it, while other folks may.
Whew!! Finally reached all of 15...very very nice sonically. Talk about Stairway to Heaven this is 'Steppes to Heaven' afaic. I still have ability to invoke Explore from Cmp screen to load all my files into cmp (I use a folder to only hold a few dozen files in Cmp). Also along this journey I did not delete any exe or dll files with 'usb' or 'fat' phrases in them and I still have ability to transfer files from thumbdrive to cmp hd. I probably could delete some of these but for now I'll settle with what I have. I'm still mulling over how much of 16 I want to do...think I want keyboard functionality. I guess when I will need more hd's I'll reload an earlier version to do file management. I know I know I should have done a network.Thank you Serge, this a masterpiece. I cannot express how appreciative I am for all your hard work. If going from Steppe 7 to 15 was grueling (for a non-computer geek like me)I can not even imagine the work you put into this. Well done!!!

Hello, everybody.
This is at last part 16.
You see, that it is extremely short.
Also, with all the tweaks from part 11-16 you will be bound to service sometimes your hdd from within another Windows computer or hdd with a copy of windows with all its functions intact.
I almost cannot find any more significant files that can be removed without a blue screen crash.
I will post here winspool.drv and some other files to be removed aside from the main bulk, but you should know that removing them you will have no keyboard, and no cmp.
However, I find that this extreme setup sounds better than cmp. Such is the reality (in my ears).
1.Safe to remove (cmp working): cmd.exe diskpart.exe fastfat.sys gdi.exe netui0.dll objsel.dll openfiles.exe parvdm.sys shell.dll shellstyle.dll shfolder.dll storage.dll storprop.dll vmmreg32.dll w32topl.dll
2. Unsafe to remove (no more cmp shell, no keyboard, no notepad to edit cue files):
winspool.drv (I don't know if it has anything in common with wispool.exe, but WHY would Cics need it, is a mystery)
KEYBOARD.DRV (from windows system)
kbdus.dll (last keyboard layout from system32)
kbdclass.sys (from system32-drivers)
olepro32.dll (from system 32) also necessary for cmp but not for cplay.
A very dirty file as all files from ole sh*tpack
OLESVR.DLL - another ole wonderkid.
Without these files cplay works fine. Moreover, it sounds standalone better than from within cmp but with dirty files in the system.
So it is a "controversy" about convenience versus better sound. Inmates, it is for you to decide, what is more important.
Also, there was a question if AWE still works. I guess it does, for cics warned that, if awe were ticked in the cplay dialogue
without the corresponding tweak, the player would exit. Mine doesn't.
Serge.
Went through steppe 16 (except for key board stuff and olepro32.dll and winspool.drv) and my initial thoughts were 'maybe a step too far' but I gave it time to see if I would get used to it but I couldn't. In anticipation of deleting olepro32 I wanted to see how much degredation I would get by 'not going through cmp' and running cplay naked and guess what ... I flatout preferred it. It is so pure in tone now that it is a whole new level ims. Cant wait to delete olepro32.dll now.

Ok more feedback on sonics. I cant really say how cplay within or not within CMP mode may sound because I either have a fouled up cmp program file or I still don't implement it right but....I have gone the full monty Steppe 16 ...all keyboard stuff out along with olepro32 out, winspool out from Windows and system 32 and I'm drinking the coolaid! The Windows folder is down to 103 mb. What a difference these last few file deletions make. Seems as if music gets louder, more dynamic, less bright, tighter bass and bigger soundstage all around @ full 16. Interestingly if I leave winspool in Windows folder but not system 32 it changes the sonics. I don't want to overhype but it is real good.
This is crazy. Took out olepro32 and it was more transparent but after some time (a day or so) I concluded it was a bit too much. Put it back in and the slight hardness went away. Then I thought what the heck lets try taking winspool out along with olepro32 and voila no hardness and bass was back big time. So only thing left to try is the keyboard stuff and only God (and Steppe) know what that will sound like. I now believe there is a pattern here and that is to follow Steppe's order of deletions.
that you are so close to the pot of gold (at the end of the rainbow).
Though, I (still) do not think it makes much, if any, difference, in the order of deletion. I know with my nLite install there were lots of files "pre-deleted" for steps 1 through 16 (though I have not done it yet successfully). I have looked through and a few are not there even for 16.
I am very frustrated by my mis-step.
I would think it easy to go back and forth between keyboard and no keyboard. Just put those in a folder and re-install as needed. That is my plan. I did prefer using my keyboard to the mouse, though, so it will be a hardship. One wonders: can one do without the mouse and get the same effect or are the keyboard drivers "dirtier" than the mouse drivers?
(I would have no idea which files to delete for the mouse)
Hope to hearing what 16 can do in a few days.
Extra Urgent!!! Something is wrong on my side of internet, thus these crazy postings, inmates. Go to your bios setup, press control+F1 to load ehanced menues, get to advanced chipset features inside it - in my mobo only oe item concerning vga or video, sorry, inmates, print it by memory in terrible internet conditions. This settings allows for max or 256 or 128 mb. Set at first to 256 mb. reboot. If cmp works set it to 128 mb.
Hello, everybody.
Here is some info that may or may not interest you, still, I think it should be posted.
The very first time I have done some tweaking of cmp setup was in the times of cplay 1-14 or 1-15.
Some of you may remember, there was a very soffft version followed by first truly great versions 1-17 and 1-19. I had a cmp based on the first prescribed mobo - biostar with sb audigy 2 soundcard and asio4all.
I noticed how cics advocated reducing windows footprint, and it reminded me of freeing memory in DOS times to launch some ega game on my first 286 machine.
So, what the hell, I said to myself, why not try it here. I tried and stopped from msconfig Windows Time. It immediately reduced commit charge in task manager from 36,5-37 mb to 35 and the sq seemed slightly better. I reported it, but no one seemed to notice.
At approximately the same time I asked Cics, if he was going to do anything about "windows' beloved infant terrible" - OLE, but he did not respond. So, be it. I was happy with the way things had been developing with a fresh
cplay every weekend. Still it was nagging me, that so much difference became evident version after version, as if somebody was playing with a d*ned equalizzzer! Though I was sure Cics wouldn't do such thing. Why, then,
the difference is so evident? After I turned to using onboard Azahlea sound device, it seemed so good after soundblaster, that I stopped worrying at all for some more time. And then it happened - Cics stopped giving us
new versions, and here we all were, sitting on our chairs, doing nothing. It was about that time that I have returned home after spending practically 4 years in Moscow. I sold my business, there was nothing pressing for me to do here, but to build another cmp with all new prescribed components.
I did it, but even splendid Lynx soundcard did little to suffuse my disappointment, that there were no new versions. The rest about belgian monastic beer and first set of tweaks, you all know.
It wasn't all blind tweaking, especially from part 5 and onward, as I began to see how things work within the window frame, but, honestly, to a great extent, it was trial and error. With dozens and dozens reboots and crashes. And now we are here.
I know this set of tweaks isn't an elegant thing, moreover, I know how time consuming and dull it is, but the result is worth it, I hope. At least to me.
Some additional info:
Most important listening was done at night. I have a dedicated custom line (made by agreement with servicing company) from the common feeder on the ground floor, no other apartment is hoggin' it. I live on the fifth floor, so there is appr. 65 feet from the feeder to my apartment.
Inside the apartment there are three different lines. Good thick copper wiring from my Accuphase days. The room has splendid proportions, though small.
Hdd, cmp machine and speakers all sit on different lines (2 lines) and all on different wall plugs. Kids from apartment below me have a hatefull wi-fi router, that explains partly my night vigils - their dad makes them switch everything off. No other neibors above or to the side, so we may say that power is more or less clean.
I used for reference the following cd-rips from my library
David Byrn - Uh-Oh (a very well recorded pre-loudness war nonremaster edition with layer upon layer of natural instruments, clever electronics and heaps of percussion)
Diana Krall - Quiet Nights (do I have to comment on the level of sq and amount of tiniest details?)
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing and Fear Of A Blank Planet - charged and smart heavy progressive with very complex sound canvas and both albums terribly compressed. (original editions)
Fish - 13th Star - a Very strong album from former Marillion frontman, overproduced and compressed as sh*t, almost undecodable till the very end. Really, Mr. Dick had it severely overdone.
Robert Plant and The Strange Sensations - Mighty Rearranger (European original edition). Also a very strong album with very complex and varying sounscape. Tracks 2 and 7 still slightly grainy.
Bob Dylan - Slow Train Coming - who would have thought there is such an amount of splendid musicianship! A very difficult album, though seemingly an absolute simpleton and no-problem.
Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare - a real nightmare remaster probably because of some specific coinsidence of recording (mastering) scheme and a set of instruments. It is grainy.
Adriano celentano - Azzurro (1969) Wait, till mandolin sounds like a mandolin
Jethro Tull J-Tull Dot Com - not exactly difficult soundwise, but I like and know this album well.
Van Der Graaf Generator - Trisector. Beautiful sound, wonderful music, complex at times, but a real pearl. A treat for every serious listener.
That is all, inmates. I am exhausted, got a terrible cold and a high temperature, lost (burned) my flash drive in a public internet cafe, my 14-year old beloved kitty is terribly ill these days (she almost can't walk and feed anymore), I hate to listen to the sound of files. I want to make a break and listen to some sad songs.
Serge.
P.S. All said is within the IMHO frame, I am not away from the forum, I just want a break.
P.P.S. How about some beer and then to remove msconfig.exe?
You said ...'And then it happened - Cics stopped giving us
new versions, and here we all were, sitting on our chairs, doing nothing'...After the Steppe journey I don't think anyone will ever accuse you of sitting on your chair doing nothing. But I find it ironic that you love Dianne Krall and Bob Dylan while I love Arvo Part's symphony #3. Go figure!
Serge,
It is not true that having the button checked will make cMP crash if you have not implemented AWE. Makes no difference on my machine and I KNOW I do not have AWE implemented.
ONLY way to tell is from the DIAGNOSTICS. If it says AWE was used then it was. If it says nothing: no AWE.
Have got to #12 and can't wait to go further this evening.
Tried to do them all at once and it did not work out. Have to re-install all of those files and start over. Working fine now.
Thanks, again,
Hi steppe,
Thanks for all the hard works. Though I am still at steppe 5 (don't want to do the heavy lifting until I find a safe way to mirror my cMP partition in a dual boot system), I can see that there is a great deal to look forward to.
It is great to know that you are a music lover. But then everyone who is so deep in the tweaking game got to be one.
KC
and you are probably not anxious to give your address.
This adventure has been like a good novel. Unexpected twists and turns - cMP actually turning out to not be the ultimate set-up. Did you figure out how to remove what it was you mentioned around #5? Not that it matters; like I said like a good novel.
You must acknowledge our other Serge's recommendation for the setting in ADVANCED CHIPSET FEATURES. It is how he has his BIOS set-up on his cMP website.
I cannot wait to get to work on this. So I will get to work!
THANKS VERY MUCH,
What is the difference in ADVANCED CHIPSET FEATURES per Mihaylov?
I had been using it for awhile, though my 512mB memory will not work with this suggested settings, which has nothing to do with the first part of my sentence. That works very well.
