Done with 7 (except for last registry tweak) Serge brings it all back to a perfect blend of pristine/clear highs to full airy bass...just wonderful. Thank you Serge. Guess what I can still get into device Mgr (but not services). I can still stop Crypto with the batch file Cics posted for those into the new mobo hw. I think it was 10-18 months ago. Do a search for it.
For anybody who did the last registry deletions: did you delete all the individual items within the keys or just the dwords on the right?
Follow Ups:
I snapshot my os disc just before last 2 or 3 steps in 7 then plunged ahead and deleted all the interior stuff in the registry keys per Serge. Worked like a charm. The sonics improved as well. Last bit of making absolutely pure highs and a sound which is fully integrated and nothing dominates from highs to lows was the result. Great sense of fine imaging on classical music was never better ims. Serge saved the best for last. For anybody mulling over whether to go with 7 or not...I say go.
And I still have device mgr but no services access.
> > "And I still have device mgr but no services access."
Admistrative tools> services requires IE5.5 or above to run. You had deleted Internet Explorer in Step 5, item 2 e. I suppose.
I restored registry back-up to pre-2 e. and got back access to services.
Too bad I can't go beyond Step 5 as system insist that I activate my Windows when I get back to winlogon. But clicking on "Activate Now" yields nothing.
Maybe time to do a fresh Windows installation.
I have never connected my machine to the internet and therefore had not activated WINDOWS either.
MINLOGON does not care about activation as you well know.
When I did XPLite (before everything fell apart) I was shocked when I returned to WINLOGON that it wanted to be activated. I thought MINLOGON stopped the clock. I guess it just slows it down!
Tried SAFE MODE and IT WORKED!!!
Give it a try.
after I kept getting an error about windows being "unable to exactly check my license for this computer error code:0x80090019" when I tried to winlogon. I ran xplite in safe mode and let it do its thing which appeared to go fine, then did step 6. All is fine at this point. I will report back after I do step 7 about whether or not I have the problem rickmcinnis had at that point.
and I doubt you will.
No one can get these things absolutely right and with the amount of work Serge has put into this project I would NEVER give him a hard time.
What is GOOD is that someone like Mihaylov is there as a backup.
As you can tell I have nothing but the warmest of feelings and regard for Mihaylov for his warning and about a thousand other things.
Strangely, XPLiite is always requesting for Windows CDRom to be inserted during components removal.
Anybody experience this?
Right you are about Mihaylov. He posted about what not to delete to preserve networking as well--too late to stop me deleting some of them but now I know what to go back and try to fix. Without him, I'd be completely done for.
Thanks for the tip.
I did activate Windows via the telephone when I did my first installation.
Anyway it said that got 3 more days to activate Windows. Let's see if I can start Windows tomorrow.
Did you do the XPLite removal of components in Safe Mode?
I did end up losing the installation entirely after a few days.
It worked fine up until I deleted the files from the "seventh directive".
The the next morning I wanted to do the registry deletions and I could not get back to XP.
I have not considered whether that (using SAFE MODE) had anything to do with it until now. Unfortunately, I have no idea.
When you do the XPLite trick see if you still have AWE by checking the cMP diagnostics.
Bye,
I guess only problem one might have with 'no services' is disc management to add new hard drives. With device mgr one can uninstall stuff not needed on the IRQ and as I recall one can add new soundcard/soundcard drivers. So until those of us run out of hdd space for new music I think we're ok.
To add sound card drivers one would need to Start Event Log, Cryptographic Services, Windows Audio, and WMI.
I think you can do it w/o restarting these services. Cics outlined a way to do it from within minlogon and device mgr....a while back. Unfortunately I don't know a way to do the same for adding a hdd.
