I am interested in everyone's experience with the quality of various HD Tracks labels in hi rez. I have had excellent results with Reference Recordings, Dorian, Chesky and 2L. But I was very disappointed with the BIS recording of Osmo Vanska's Beethoven symphonies 2 & 7. I had seen rave reviews of the SACD version, but when I downloaded it in 24/88.2 from HD Tracks, the sound quality was nothing special. My RBCD version by Gunther Wand on RCA has better SQ. Also, BIS had not bothered to divide the symphonies into separate tracks for the various movements. Now I am wondering which labels I can buy with confidence.
I am especially interested in the classical music labels.
Cheers,
Bill

This is why i would not buy from HDTracks.
Buy only from those whose files are derived from known sources and resolutions.
It is a stupid business strategy to not check on what you sell and rely on buyers to tell you.
As far as I know, all that are presently being sold. At least that's been my experience.
HD tracks presently sells a 44/16 download of the BIS Vamska B2/B7. All the BIS albums are presently offered only in 44/16. It looks like HDtracks removed the 88/24 version you purchased. Perhaps a bit of history will be useful. BIS makes a practice of up sampling 44 kHz masters to DSD and issuing these on SACD, a practice that is deceptive at best. On another web site, BIS has admitted to this practice, probably after forensic analysis of their products exposed the practice.
It's probably too late, but if I were you I would ask for a refund on your 88/24 BIS B2/B7. I do not believe that HDtracks did anything wrong, other than to be taken in by BIS's questionable practices.
As to the tracking problems. In the past, there had been tracking problems with a few HDtracks downloads that I purchased. (This happened with several labels.) In each case, I complained and the problem was promptly fixed and I was given a new download.

for some reason I am unable to read more than half my BIS hybrid discs for cooing into iTunes. I have a few other hybrids that the DVD drive will not read. BIS is the only label that is cosistant in having trouble accessing the redbook layer.
Never tried the 44.1/16 layers in my SACD player.

If you have another computer or a different drive, try it. I don't have any BIS CDs, but I have run across the occasional disk that won't read, usually because of scratches, but a few old Compact Jazz disks seemed to suffer from some kind of "rot".
You may get better ripping results with another program, such as EAC or dBpoweramp. Both of these will "camp on" a bad spot and try reading it dozens of times before giving up. (This has its downside—it wore out one drive in an overnight vigil.) You can also elect to make an "unsecure" rip, in which case you may get the music, but with some snap, crackle and pop as well. (Or it may sound OK, it all depends on the disk.)

These are all new, recent BIS hybrid discs. I ripped close to 20 from LSO, RCA, and Hyperion without an issue. I do not remember ever getting more than 2 BIS discs to rip in a row. Usually the drive just opens and it acts like it is a blank disc.
Do not think it is my DVD drive. Suspect out of spec layering.
The disk may be out of spec. Your drive may be out of spec the other way. With a different drive you might get lucky and avoid a problem.

Tony,
Not reading in my Mac Mini is an issue with about 20 of the 30 BIS hybrib discs. It is the discs and not the drive. I have another 100 hybrid discs from other labels and maybe 2 do not read the redbook.
I purchased these for the DSD layer. Never used the redbook until switching to computer audio.

Like I said, until you try the disks in a different drive, you do not know whether the problem is with the drive or the disks. Likely, but not certain.

That was very helpful. I will try for a store credit and continue to explore other labels.
Also, thanks for sharing the downloads of your wife's recitals, on an ealier post. They were excellent.
Cheers,
Bill
