was driving down the road with a PDA in one hand and a Motorola Flip Phone in the other saying, "Why can't they be in one device?).
Steve Jobs saw a much larger number of people walking around with MP-3 players, some with NO phone at all, and the rest is, as they say, is HISTORY!
An engineer I used to work with and I had a big bet as to who would win the PDA format war, Palm or Windows.
What do engineers know? :-)
Follow Ups:
sometimes very little how their customer base uses the products. :)
I have zero need for my phone to be a file management device.
Me too?
Me either?
Me neither?
That would be because...
I'm retired!
But there was a time when the Palm Treo's file handling ability was a huge issue. I was able to carry most of the companies currently active documents, contracts, proposals, patents, results of clinical trials, everything, on a chip plugged into the phone and to easily receive, edit and attach to email, any of those documents.
And yes, with a bit of work, one can do most of those things with an iPhone and the use of what-was-not-existent-at-the-iPhone's-introduction, the 'cloud'.
Also happy to report that I'm now on my third iPhone and my 'Music' library is still completely EMPTY!
For a bunch of old Geezers y'all sure are smart.

Thankful though all your help with this computer stuff.
I the guy who couldn't get my Raspberry Pi to work without 'phone support' from inmate 'Bullethead'.
I appreciated talking to an elder audiophile.
However all I remember from the conversation was you asking me to give you my Harbeths, lol. I don't remember helping you at all.
My advice to you is to enjoy the 'pen' and check out some Shpongle. Tales from the Inexpressible.
It was worth a try!
Much like the Meridian Explorer 2 DAC, you said you were no longer using them. :-)
I have some bel canto long in the tooth equipment and the Harbeth Compact 7ES3, ready to go for a second system. I just have to get off my chair.
I plan on hooking up an unmodified Sonos connect to the Bel Canto DAC, and call it a day, however I might have to get it modified, I don't think I would be able to deal with a non-modded connect after hearing the Wyred 4 sound connect.
beat the stock SONOS connect in every respect.
And cheaper as well.
yes! I forgot about the RPi after I was done with it, I'll just hook that up instead.
thanks.
Not bad at all...
Could maybe be better with the right drugs.
Might have to make a few phone calls.
Oh, and the Pi is now 'rockin' a new iFi iPower switching wall wart pictured above.
Thinking it might be better than the 24,000 mAh battery I was using before.
Could be!
that's the one I have. I was all done with the RPi experiment a few months ago, it does sound fantastic. If I was to compare to Sonos modded, probably the same or a tad bit better, that is the RPi compared to the Sonos modded, the hacked up RPi sounds a tad bit better. At least using Rune Audio.
enjoy!
Hacked up how?
At this point, my MacBook Air USB + Jitterbug to my AudioGD DAC still seems to be 'slightly' better than the RaspberryPi HiFiBerry Digi+ Pro S/PDIF to the same DAC and that's with any and all PS upgrades I have attempted so far.
Any future 'hacks' are appreciated.
Just Digi+ pro, IFI power supply, and I say Rune Audio.
That's Rune Audio 0.4 beta, I've blabbered about it before.
Looks like a lot of file management here.

PDF Files are stored using a number of applications - I use iBooks."

If mere file handling is sufficient, they why bitch about the lack of "...a full-function file manager app" and go elsewhere?
New iOS 11 app, appropriately called... (wait for it)
for those challenged using specific apps I guess. :)
Guessing it is more an attempt to sell some, make that ANY, iPads.
The march of iOS merging with OS-X continues but the fact is, the iPad is a poor excuse for a laptop.
OK, IMNSHO.
Great for controlling LMS on my Raspberry Pi and some LIGHT evening catching up on the 'twitter feed' before drifting off to sleep, but....
laptop functionality, why not buy a laptop? :)
.
I use an iPhone, iPad and Win10 based laptop. Wifey uses an iPhone, iPad and MacBook air.
Each serves a different purpose . Hence, their existence.
Do you want to carry an LTE based laptop in your back pocket?
My wife loves her iPad Pro 9.7 so much more than her 13" MacBook Pro. I also bought a keyboard for her iPad Pro and she spends hours on it daily.
I'm just the opposite. I use my Mac laptop daily for pretty much everything. I have it hooked up to a 22" LCD screen on my desk along with a bluetooth keyboard & mouse. In those situations when I need to run off on a quick errand or whatever I take my iPhone which tucks into my pocket.
I rarely use my iPad except for occasional web browsing and as a remote control for Roon/Tidal, Audiravana Plus, iTunes, etc.
She loves the iPad as her go-to daily driver. I much prefer my Mac laptop.
In those rare occasions where I "need" Windows, I just launch a Windows 7 or Windows 10 virtual machine on the Mac using Parallels Desktop.
My wife is the same way. She is a university administrator and uses hers around campus for a number of tasks and meetings in lieu of carrying around the Macbook. She has always used a keyboard/case with hers as well.
I have a slightly newer Air version with this keyboard/case . Similarly, I prefer it for business travel to my larger laptop needed only for product demonstrations. I use the pad as movie theatre, music playback system, internet browser, email client, and use Keynote for presentations (along with iPhone as remote). For two different conferences I attended this year where I was a presenter, it was a no brainer to use the pad in that role. I use the HDMI adapter for the external display.
At home, mine lives on my bedside table and used for a range of tasks including Roku remote. With the iPeng app, it serves as a renderer to my LMS based system for listening via my Shure 535 IEMs. An older one (actually wifey's first also with keyboard ) lives upstairs using iPeng as primary remote to control uRendu in main system. While also allowing checking of SPL, email and surfing while listening.
I would never schlep my laptop to the bedroom or upstairs to do those things! Although I am anything but a visionary (my wife has always taken that role with mobile electronics in my household!), I get why Ive says that he's not impressed with hybrid tablet/laptop computers.
I use the iPad Mini 4 around the house including in the bedroom to read. However, I still schlep my laptop around for meetings but I will generally carry my smaller MacBook Air 11-inch. I use the typical PowerPoint, Excel, and Word (MS Office Mac version) since my company has standardized on MS Office. Some co-workers use iPad on travel but I never warmed up to it personally.
The 11-inch MacBook Air in the Incase bag fits vertically under the airline seat in front of me so I still have plenty of leg room.

I could be an Apple guy yet !Cut-Throat

While E-STAT and Abe are just amateurish 'consumers'. ;-)
