Something that you can purchase from the Moode web site for $10.Not sure how I feel about the forced donation, but setup went pretty smoothly. Won't be able to comment on SQ until tomorrow as it is too late here to fire up the amplifier.

Is this my software? Will it run with just music on a stick plugged into one of the USB ports of the Raspberry Pi with Ethernet just for the iPad to control it over my network?
My headless MAcMini is in the shop for a couple weeks with Thunderbolt hard drive issues so I want to try something that does not require an additional computer as server like Logitech Media Server.
If it sounds BETTER, and 'bullethead' is the final arbiter on SQ here, I guess I can live with that as well. :-)
Moode will work as you wish, AND it supports the Digi+ Pro unlike Volumio currently,3.5 the version released this week is $10 donation it looks like from the project site, if you want the older one to give it a whirl as a test for free here's the source forge link to 3.1 which I was using last week and it sounded great, remember to unzip before writing the .img file, https://sourceforge.net/projects/moodeaudio/

The good news is that it sounds better than the beta version of Rune.
The bad news is that it sounds worse than the current release version of Rune. At least on my Mamboberry LS+. My experience in the past has been that the overall sound of software music players tends to transcend hardware differences more or less.
If you didn't like the way 3.1 sounded odds are good that you won't like 3.5 either because they sound very similar.
For me Moode has always has a "glossed over" slightly out of focus sound and this version seems to follow suite.
Tried the DSP options such as low boost. There is definitely more bass, but it's an artificial sounding bass. Same thing with the high boost. The best setting for the DSP seemed to be "disabled".
If you are playing with Moode, be sure to try the alternative kernals, cpu governor, and MPD scheduling settings. I'm currently using "Advanced", "Performance", and "RR" respectively, on an RPI2 > HifiBerry Digi+ > Twisted Pear Opus DAC. This is with Moode 3.1. I'll update today or tomorrow to 3.5 I'm sure settings may need to be changed for different combinations of components.

I don't understand the mentality that the more you "tweak" something, the better is will sound.
Would is not be reasonable to assume that the developers of these audio apps, especially one can only be had with forced donation, would put their best foot forward and make the default settings and least reasonably good?
I have swapped out the kernel, disabled unused outputs, etc. and heard only minimal, probably psychosomatic, differences.
I don't understand what the differences are between Volumio, Moode, Rune, and Piss Poor(Pi Core) are, but they each sound different from one another in ways that no amount of settings changes will produce.

Since a system is made of many parts, I feel a need to optimize my whole system when I hear what I perceive to be a sound quality flaw. I do believe that no system is perfect, and that virtually no system cannot be improved through systematic investigation of setup, even if the hardware is unchanged. My amps and speakers may sound better with a certain adjustment where yours may sound worse. In a complex system there are no absolutes.
As I can only change one component or aspect of one component at at time, I try to understand where within the system I might make a change that might yield an improvement. Currently, since digital audio is still evolving fairly quickly, parameters such as players, player settings, power supplys, and digital communication (USB, SPDIF, ethernet, etc.) offer handles for optimization not just of that part of the system, but the whole system.
I usually to do not expect to hear and improvment with most changes. But, every once and a while, I get an incremental improvement.

Reasonabley good? Yes! But not as good as it might be when tailored to my whole system, and my ears (old but still OK, not great).

True of most changes for me as well. I leave those that I believe make sense, such as decreasing CPU load, as long as I, at least, hear no degradation, and I keep the few changes that seem to help sonically.

I suspect that Volumio, Moode, and Rune, all using MPD, can be tweaked to sound almost alike. Many differences arise from differences in the kernal version, the MPD version, and ALSA differences. The three players are probably never on the same versions or default installation configuration. PcP and Moode using Squeezelite are probably subject to the same versional issues.
Plus, I enjoy playing with things occasionally (and am happy to stop for months at a time). Sounds like you find this fiddling less rewarding overall. I think it comes down to personal differences.

Oh Yeah! Often a change under test will help one aspect of your system and harm another. It really helps to have priorities that reflect your personal responses. My old ears don't tolerate harshness at all. I really didn't have those priorities sorted until I was in my late '50s.

This is a very interesting topic and question you brought up, with the same hardware we are all hearing differences with just changing software.

I say we should all congratulate ourselves because we can hear a difference.

I have been enjoying Rune Audio more than Moode Audio.

the one I see is 0.4 beta on a google drive link, I'm flashing it now, it is supposed to work with the hifi berry digi+ pro, thanks for reminding me of rune.
