How is the program erroring out when I tried to install the file system that it told me I had to install to get access to my files over the network my fault? I am using the newest non beta version available. Talk about blame the victim mentality!
I was not setting out to fail at anything. I had an honest noob experience. I wanted to find out if Pi Core would be as easy to set up, use, and sound as good as the MPDs. I was even willing to accept a few hizzards along the way, but what I got was nowhere. I asked for help, albeit maybe maybe not in the most diplomatic way, but the mentality regarding this software is that it is easier to use and performs better than MPDs. When I demonstrated that not to be the case everyone blamed me. I'm not biased here. I just want something that works and sounds good. That's all.
MPD(Volumio, Moode, and Rune)
Write image to card. Boot up, enable i2s, select my DAC, add a network share, wait a few minutes for the program to scan my music library, disable HDMI, Bluetooth, and WIFI, restart, and start listening to music.
Total time invested about 10 minutes.
Pi Core
Write image to card, boot up, expand file system, install LMS, attempt to add my network share except button is grayed out until I add additional file system support, attempt to add it, fails, reboot, try several more times, no go. Not listen to music.
Total time invested about an hour.
Follow Ups:
Otherwise, you would have not tried to load LMS on your Rpi. ---- If you really want to do this. Start anew with a better attitude.

works for me.
No, as a former product manager for medical gadgets (user manuals are part of the deal and reviewed by FDA), I can say with certainty that these particular gadgets, fun as they are, are NOT 'plug-n-play'.
BUT, that's not the point of a $100 DIY project.
As a former kit builder (HeathKits in the 60's) I'd say the Raspberry Pi is more right in the kit builders strike zone.
And like the Heath Kits and Dynaco's of the past, good sound is icing on the cake.
I can say with certainty that these particular gadgets, fun as they are, are NOT 'plug-n-play'.
Ironically, the most time consuming part for me was assembling the multi-layer case! Once you've got a burned SD card, a digital board/DAC, a case and a power supply, the rest is configuration not terribly different from when I first got a SB Touch years ago.
With that you still had to install LMS - ideally on a separate PC - and optimize some settings. While the Touch had its own screen, I find that hitting the Pi with its IP address not terribly difficult.
BUT, that's not the point of a $100 DIY project.
Now you can spend $1200 on the Bryston model and get the same results. :)
no one in their right mind will think they get same level of performance from a little $35 computer compared to Bryson equipment, I assume there's also a warranty with that Bryson as they are known for.
that's nonsense. :)
from a little $35 computer
A little $35 computer alone cannot play music.
...compared to Bryson equipment
Do you understand why the product name is called the "BDP-Pi"?
Go ahead and click the link I provided in my previous post and read the section called "Features. :)
yes, lots of features. Your paying for great high end software, great high end hardware and a warranty.
You get what you pay for. If that had AES/EBU I would consider buying one.
I'm happy with my modded Sonos connect, also the RP DIY route is fun, but that's all it is is fun, not professional.
It is a nightmare to get all the streaming services on linux systems. You need to invest in software developers and partnerships with the web services and license APIs. That's where the costs come in.
Your paying for great high end software, great high end hardware and a warranty.
High end software? Based upon exactly what? The same $35 computer and equally inexpensive HiFiBerry adapter are used here.
I'll pass on paying $1100 for a fancy case, power supply and warranty. :)
I'll stick to my Sonos Connect as well.
One can definitely fiddle with a Matricom G Box, it runs android, probably all you need, I'll put the link below to it from Amazon. Google Play store works with it.
Link below, there's other G boxes out there,
"High end software" claim was wishful thinking. :)
As a software developer myself, I would rather use something that's been in the field for years and years and tested and refined by huge numbers of users vs. adopting something with little actual use.
I'll stick to my Sonos Connect as well.
Which limits you to Redbook quality. Why limit yourself to 1980 era resolution?
I have an Auralic source. DAC and Transport.
Maybe 2 high res albums.
Of some kind. :-)
When the Digi+ pro first came out I ordered one. They shipped me a Dac instead, and of course I told them they sent the wrong item. Instead of immediately fixing the problem [after I sent a pic etc to prove my claim] HifiBerry tried to sell me the Dac and when I said no they wanted me to ship it back to them on MY NICKLE. Then reimburse me AFTER they got the Dac back.
I was like HUH?!?! let me get this straight, you want me to go out of my way, on my day off and drive to the post office, stand in line and pay for postage back to Norway or where ever its from. Then wait weeks for my money back....nahhhhhhhh Eat the cost or send me a prepostage paid envelope.

You can buy all of this stuff on AMAZON for only a few $$ more but with free one day shipping if you have PRIME.
That's what I just did, and yes, I mistakenly ordered the DAC+ Pro and had to quickly change it to a Digi+ Pro which is easy on Amazon if your order has not shipped.
Yes I have Amazon PRIME too.
But when I ordered it was not yet listed on Prime. And in my case I ordered to 'correct' item but they shipped the wrong item.

listen I don't know what's in the water but we are all completely nuts.
I'm going to try to help double28, he emailed me.
:)
If you talk to him tell him Cut-Throat doubts his manhood because setting up a Raspberry Pi with LMS/PcP just SOOOO easy. ;-)
I wanted to check the system you speak of out but I have to get another MicroSD card, still should wait for the RP case to come because if I spill beer on it I might start a fire or harm myself.
Can you believe the Supermarket I go to doesn't have MicroSD cards?
and they can diliver one in 2 days free if you have Prime.
Remember these are technical Forums. They assume a reasonable amount of technical savvy. And a little bit of patience. No one is refused help here. And remember you were just starting to flash your SD Card last Friday and now you're all done, have Qobuz running and looking at further mods.
You could have done it yourself without the phone call if you were a little more patient and willing to try a few things on your own.

Most of these responses are completely missing the point. I was testing the assertion that Pi Core was as easy or easier to setup and use than the MPDs.
A reasonable unbiased person would have to admit that in an apples to apples comparison that assertion is false. Having to install additional software on the Pi and or the computer on which a network share is located is not easier than just having it work after changing a few settings.
A reasonable unbiased person would have to admit that in an apples to apples comparison that assertion is false.
Only with your experience.
It's true I already had LMS running on my desktop since I've been running SBTs for years, but setting up the RPi as a player literally took ten minutes before I was listening to music.
Now, building the Zebra Top Hat case did take me a good hour to assemble. :)
You're missing something not experienced by others.
As they say, 'assume' makes an 'ass' of 'u' and 'me'.
I'll pass on the 'assumptions'.
Fortunately, these boards are also populated by people who are not so quick to assume' things about those they do not know.
God man, it only took you a couple days!
Cut-Throat
Some with 'assumptions', others thankfully without.
I'll give it a whirl, got to buy another MicroSD card.
my problem is you need another machine with LMS, very inconvenient.
Obviously he planed to fail to succeeded at it....
Dynobots Audio - Music is the Bridge Between Heaven and Earth
Well, you have to have some file Server on your network anyway. So when I had my Sonos, I still had to have another machine to manage the files. And then I had the Sonos App on that PC. Whether a NAS or a PC. So, I am not seeing much of a difference.
Cut-Throat
Not worth it for me, I don't have a NAS or file server, I mostly stream so Sonos is good, this Pi sounds pretty good though, I ordered the case and a low noise power supply.
I have a question for you, there is no way to turn on the system without resetting power right? I don't see a power button.
So, you don't have any digital music stored at all?
Cut-Throat
Like Bullethead I have about 500G of music on a disk, but I rarely listen to it.
I am having more fun discovering new music that I don't have.
Every so often if I find a really good artist with a good amount of material under their belt I might buy some CD's to rip [used]. But as it stands I haven't listened to my HD music in about 6 months.
Dynobots Audio - Music is the Bridge Between Heaven and Earth
Me Too ! .... I have 1.5 TB of stored music, but rarely listen to it.
My point was; that it is still on-line and available and accessible. And you still have to have a File Server of some sort to access it.
Cut-Throat
I have about 500gb of music on an HDD drive I plug in.
Where do you 'Plug it in'?
Also, since you stream a lot are you into Jazz? If so, are you familiar with the Russian Jazz Stations on Tunein Radio. 24 hour uninterrupted great American Jazz. Commercial Free. And at higher quality than 99% of the other stations in the World...
Cut-Throat
first RP 3 I had I made a NAS with a linux distro, that's how I was playing to the Sonos, gave that away. The setup now I plug into the USB port on the RP 3.
so I have to correct myself, I don't know how Sonos sounds with a HDD directly plugged into it, you can't do that with the Connect. But from memory the RP 3 and the files directly connect to it sound better than from the NAS to to sonos.
I can play it on a RaspberryPi running PcP?
Of course I may not be technical enough to figure out how to do that, even with a video to watch and the positive encouragement of inmate 'Cut-throat', but I could TRY! ;-)
that's not what you want to do. Run LMS on a separate PC/server. For me, that is a no-brainer since I use multiple players (4). Why replicate server functionality for each player?
An RPi's 1 GHz internal memory is the limiting factor. Rather than have it house PcP and LMS, it's far better to use the memory to buffer the output so that you're playing from memory.
just LSD,
whoops you means the software, LOL!
I have no idea how it works, you figured out the issue you had by yourself when we talked. IP address was the key.
:)
As far as Power goes, there is no power switch.
What I did in our Master Bath for my wife was:
We have a Shelf where I put a couple speakers a Teac Integrated DAC/Amp and a RPi on it. Plugged them all into a Power Strip that is hooked to a switchable outlet. All my wife has to do is flip a switch when she walks into the bathroom and 15 seconds later, her favorite radio station is playing.
