So, as we sink deeper and deeper into the abyss....
Seem to be reading that a Raspberry Pi can also be used to 'run' LMS instead of or as well as being used as a player?
What does that mean, really?
Does it mean that I no longer have to have LMS running on one of the computers on my network? I currently have LMS loaded on all of the computers on my network but only running on one at a time, mostly my headless Mac Mini which I keep on all of the time.
Be really easy to cobble together a second RaspberryPi, load PcP and plug it into the network somewhere to run LMS.
Maybe too easy to be possible?
You could do it, but what would be the point?
Is Qobuz working now for you? BTW- How big a Library does Qobuz have for Jazz?
If there is NO other downside, it would alleviate the need to have the headless Mac Mini running LMS and being on all of the time. If I could just plug in a cheap, $35 Raspberry Pi running PcP (no Digi + board required?) into a network jack anywhere in the house, why dedicate a computer to this task?
Running QOBUZ without a hitch. A bit sluggish with multiple entries of the same albums with the SqueezeBox app on the iPad but not with LMS on a Macbook Air, so I suspect a bug or two in the Squeezebox iPad app as it talks to QOBUZ to download my Favorites.
More Jazz on TIDAL or QOBUZ?
More obscure stuff on QOBUZ, that's for certain(at least for Classical). I have always preferred QOBUZ to TIDAL but streaming the same stuff A:B I admit that any difference is subjective and likely not even real.
Said another way, even though there is no difference in sound quality between the two, I prefer the sound quality of QOBUZ to TIDAL.
Well, sure you could do that, but you had said your Mac Mini was 'on all the time'..... So what else are you using the Mac Mini for?
We have a new (Very Fast Lenovo Desktop) in our Home Office that is also on all the time, so that is a great place to run LMS.
You could give it try with your current RPi and see if it works with one of them..... Maybe if you can't hear a difference, you would not even have to buy another one.
BTW - I can even run LMS on my Synology NAS System, but since my Desktop is always on, and in use most of the time by my wife and I, I choose to run LMS on it.
But it doesn't need to be if I can run LMS on a RaspberryPi.
Especially if we can take it one step beyond just using the Raspberry Pi as the LMS host and hook a USB hard drive to it which has my ripped CDs on it?
Am I dreaming or is that possible.
Why would you care if a Mac Mini is 'on all the time' vs. a RPi that is 'on all the time'.....
It's probably possible, but I have not done it...... Why don't you try it and report back to us. You can do this with 1 Rpi... But the audiophiles will tell you that they can hear bad things when you do this. But, at least you'll know it will work before you order another Rpi.
I think you are headed in the direction of a NAS now...... Why don't you investigate a NAS. Lots of features and much faster than USB disk storage..
I have one at home, and can access my storage anywhere in the World with internet....
Why would a Raspberry Pi sound BAD as running LMS but sound GOOD as a player?
If anything, one would think it the other way round?
But yes, we do look to be heading in the general direction of a NAS with LMS running on the NAS and be done with it.
Rip CDs to the NAS from any room in the house with a computer? Works for me. NAS drive in the garage next to the router?
OK by me.
"Why would a Raspberry Pi sound BAD as running LMS but sound GOOD as a player?"
What I said was that some Audiophiles would say that the RPi would not sound as good running LMS AND a Player - In other words the preferred method would be to run LMS from a different Computer than the Player.
And understand that I have no idea, as I have never tried it....
One Pi running LMS somewhere in the house attached to the network and a second with HiFiBerry Digi+ Pro running as a player. Mostly used for streaming TIDAL and QOBUZ so who cares is the computer with the music on the hard drive is even up and running.
Wife likes to turn things off, not standby, OFF.
It's technically possible, but I've never tried it. I have always had LMS running on my Desktop System, which always stays on for other duties.
