In Reply to: RE: Just the Digi +, because I'm not a 'pro' yet... posted by Ivan303 on April 10, 2017 at 07:04:38
I picked up a battery power supply from Musical Paradise. My intent was to run the dig+ board from it.
Right now I'm listening to my second system a lot via a Chord Mojo. To my ears the Mojo sounds better via usb. So I tried to power that Raspberry with the battery supply. For whatever reason, I think the cheap apple charger sounds better. What the heck?
Next up, I'll use the battery to supply 5 volts to the Mojo via a split USB cable.
So many things don't make sense!
Anyway, I ended up with a package of 4 headers to send power to the digi+.(for my other system) As shipping costs more than the dang headers, I'm happy to send some out to folks in the us who need them.
And remember, those cell phone batteries have really cheap noisy voltage regulators in them!
Follow Ups:
as I didn't think they had enough current capability to run the Raspberry Pi.
The Wall Wart that came with the Raspberry Pi is rated at 5.1V/2.5A.
Already had the 24,000mAh battery pack for travel and emergency use as everything in the house seems to a require USB charger and all of my outlets are hidden behind furniture.
What's a 'header'?
Most things I've read says the top hats from HiFi Berry (and others) improve with their own clean power source.
On top of your digi+ is a blank soldering hole labeled R5 ( I think...I'm at work) You can attach wires or in this case a header (Im obvs not an EE) to hook it up to a regulated power supply or battery or whatever to power it directly. You can go further and cut two of the pins that connect the top hat to the pi and then power the pi from another source to give each component a different power supply.
You might recognize my office speakers.
Terry left them at my place in Utah on his way to Vegas for what was probably his last C.E.S. I was on my way to Vegas as well so the next day I tossed them in the trunk of the car. When I mentioned that he had forgotten them he replied, "I left them at your place on purpose, I wanted you to have them."
Yep...that was Terry. I am still trying to get thru the piles of equipment he traded for (and most of it he never opened) I traded him a nice Revox G36 for a pair of IM-Bens. I know he never touched it.
I also have a pair of Rat-pipes. A smaller version of the Abby with a radio shack driver. They give me so much pleasure.
Boy do I miss lunch with that guy. A sweeter man has never walked the earth. I'm glad I have his talented wife to still call my friend.
I was living in Utah from Late 90's to mid to 2007 hung with the Utah Triode Mafia (ElecronLuv, et al.) in those days. Made it to to Walla Walla to see Terry once for a get together plus a few VSACs and all that.
Do miss him. One of a kind!
Ha...you are probably right..I moved here in 2003 I think. I miss Josh's amps too..loved going over there to get a listen to Terry's big system.
I remember when he brought back a computer to play music files ( to make this a legit post in (Computer Audio). I told him he was nuts.
And now I'm Roon and Tidal all the time. I should learn to shut up and listen.
