In your opinion, what is your favorite software for the Rpi ?Cut-Throat
Follow Ups:
To my mind DietPi
To my ears PiCorePlayer
Don't know why, DietPi on paper and by all reasoning due to it being lighter and having more tweakability should sound better. But my ears like PiCorePlayer...even as an endpoint for Roon. Meaning to my ears PiCorePlayer sounds better than the Roon-Bridge....shrugging shoulders.
Is this appropriate if I don't have a SB

Can you clarify your question?
I don't have a Squeezebox. Is Diet Pi out PiCore valid for my use or should I go with Rune or Volumio?
Will
The Rpi takes the place of a SB.
Don't mean to be so stupid but with Diet Pi are you also using additional software to actually run your music library.
The single board computer (Raspberry Pi or whatever running DietPi) is a streaming client. You would generally be running music server software such as Squeeze Server, Volumio, Daphile, Roon, MPD, etcetera on a different computer on your network. The SBC would run client software such as Squeezelight, Roon Bridge, or HQPlayer network bridge, and the other computer (network music server) would stream to it. The idea is that you can have a tiny, low power, hopefully electrically quiet, headless computer hooked up to the stereo.
I hope this answers your question.
Just so I understand:
1. I am downloading for Mac an sd card formatter.
2. Next I will download raspberrypi.org/noobs
3. This will be be loaded onto the SD card
If this is correct, I am confused from here. My goal is to have Rune,Volumio or similar on the RP feeding into my DAC. I want the RP to pull music off the NAS attached to router and control all of this with my ipad or iphone.
I am confused as to what to do after step 3 above and where to download Rune, Volumio etc...
Thank you in advance for assistance and as is obvious I am way above my paygrade here but a willing student.

I'm right behind you asking nearly the same questions.
Ha Ha.... Wyred 4 Sound Sonos is on her way home. Will arrive tomorow morning. I really got stupid and bought a Mad Scientist carbon fiber digital cable and it should arrive from New Zealand on Saturday. Should be a great weekend. Wife thinks I have lost it but at least she hasn't lost me. LOL
I am sure there are a few folks out there who can use a brand new hifiBerry Pi with the Digi card, fully assembled with a power supply and SD card included.

I have a stock SONOS Connect hooked to the S/PDIF input of my DAC/Headphone amp where I currently stream music via USB from a Macbook Air.
Even TIDAL and QOBUZ sound noticeably better with the USB input from a computer than via S/PDIF from the stock SONOS Connect, enough so that I no longer use it.
If the Raspberry Pi/LMS turns out to be a PITA to use streaming TIDAL and QOBUZ, I might be tempted to go the upgraded SONOS route.
I tried the SONOS connect, via coaxial digital output to an external DAC. I wanted it to work because the user interface was good and because of the wide selection of streaming sources.
Unfortunately, the sound quality was inferior compared to the Squeezebox SB3 it was replacing (using the same DAC on both). The sound was flat, 2-dimensional and lifeless. Perhaps if I had sent it off to W4S for their upgrade it might have been OK, but I returned it and tried a Denon HEOS Link. User interface was just as good, price was the same, and sound quality was MUCH better. Easily as good (or better, I think) than the Squeezebox. And the internal DAC in the HEOS Link sounds very good, as good as the external DAC I was using.
As BH says below....I will let you know. The mod is the same as the RP with the hifiBerry sound card which is what we just received. W4S replaces the stock Connect sound card with a much better revision.
I love the idea of RP and it is a "cute" device as my wife commented, but the fiddly nature to set up is not my cup of tea. If I am going to pull my hair out I would rather mess with mounting a cartridge. Concerning computers, I am a plug and play kind of guy. 100 years ago I sold Westinghouse automation gear and had one of the first Compaq computers. It was in the configuration of a suit case and the bottom hinged down and contained the keyboard. I have served my time programming and writing code....

You can't compare the mod to RPi, Wyred 4 sounds also puts a Low noise power supply for the clock, etc,,,
The magic with the Sonos is all the apps you have built in, and you don't have to be a alien to figure it out.
Modding the Sonos is the best investment in my system so far, I spent a ton of money on Auralic Aries and it doesn't compare to Sonos because there are no apps to add music services besides the basic ones, Sonos has band camp, deezer, google, pandora, etc,,, much better if you are done buying cds and rather rent than buy.
How soon depends on my luck the the Raspberry Pi.
I do wish he would come up with an I2S solution that is either PSAudio or RJ45 compatible so I could hook the SONOS up directly to my Audio-GD DAC via I2S.
The Rpi running LMS gives you a lot more services than SONOS...As well as a much better User Interface. Plus a Worldwide community that writes Plugins that are very useful.LMS is pretty easy to figure out...No Alien-ware needed.

modded sonos is glorious, vs stock sonos which is shit.
does that clear it up?
just trying to tell it like it is :)
guessing you hear that criticism a lot though, no? ;-)
at '$0.00' plus FREE shipping, you'll have a hard time asking the $100 it's worth. :-(
Follow my steps for PiCorePlayer it applies to Mac
I run PiCorePlayer and it sounds great to me too!

Also imo PiCore is rock solid.
DietPi is kinda mushy....firm but not exactly rock solid.
I like the PiCorePlayer features...... Especially the Auto-Startup of a Radio Station when Hard booting.
I have a Rpi in the Master Bath with a small Teac Digital Amp/DAC combo. All my wife has to do is throw a switch and her radio station is playing in about 15 seconds.
