Due to what klooks like a meltdown of my Squeeebox contoller (too long, tedious AND embarrasing) to go through here, I am looking/thinking of moving from wireless to wired and came across a few people using Musicbee, a number of them from Head-Fi.
I tried it and spent the expected couple of hours cursing that can't get it laid out the way I want and then realised I was clicking in all the wrong places.
Because I have a wired connection, comparisons are a bit tricky, but (taking that into account), I quite like it even if I get a suspicion of harshness or edge. Then again I am pasting it together with dull as dishwater computer cables and it might do with a Jitterbug (or similar).
So.... anything from the commentariat?

Excellent piece of freeware
Audio is by BASS-lib, a popular collection of open source audio
Supports drivers like ASIO and WASAPI
Like the interface
The Well Tempered Computer
Looks interesting.
Which driver should one use, WASAPI? Does it matter which driver is used if one is using a Dragonfly DAC?
Yes, if you do "nothing" you get DS, Direct Sound
If you want bit perfect playback, use WASAPI
The Well Tempered Computer
... changed over to WASAPI and found it worthwhile.
Perhaps a more controlled less blown out sound.
AFter my adventures with the Squeezebox, which included the controller turning itself into a radio receiver(!), I am enjoying the immediacy of this and having it wired in does seem to add a degree of solidity to the sound, although if that suggests a lack of transparency it wasn't what I meant.
No, I haven't but perhaps the greater question has to do with continuing to use a server fed renderer vs moving to a direct computer connection. And your budget.
I used a Logitech Touch driven by LMS for years in a wired environment. Today, I use a Sonore microRendu unit still using LMS to access the content from the server.
I quite like it even if I get a suspicion of harshness or edge.
Though you'll find a range of opinions on this topic, this is why I prefer to use a tiny, optimized for audio playback only renderer in the system proper connected to a server located on a different floor of the house via a longish CAT7 ethernet cable. And take great pains to minimize EMI/RFI via all matter of AC isolation.
... is actually on my list of considerations, and I know it is well liked round these parts.
The Squeezebox wnt haywire at the weekend and at one point I was listening to internet radio ON actually ON the controller (I have a Duet).
Being in remote central queensland means nothing arrives quickly so I decided to wire the (old and very cheap) netbook into the system leaving the external hard drive to store music files.
Wherever I finish up, I think I am done with sending the music over the LAN.
