I have been wondering for a long time about Transcendent Audio's OTL amps,
in particular The Beast, which seems to be a relatively cost effective solution in many ways for people looking for high OTL power. Does anyone here have any experience with them?
Follow Ups:
I don't have the Beasts, but the T16.
I have heard the Beast at a friends house and one thing that struck me right away was how effortless, clean and powerful these amps play. Never heard any other amp do this, not even the T16 ( at least not in that extend).
Excuse me butting in but would like to ask you about your Truth. Thanks.
Go right ahead.
I assume you read my review here in the Review section.
"Before I always thought and felt that a pre-amp is like a window, some are very clean, some are a little smeary, but this was a complete new few – without a window. "
Without a window, you see a "brick" wall.
Hi KIS;
Hope your not staring at a brick wall ;-)
I have come to the conclusion that any time the signal has to go through a volume pot it will have less detail and clarity then the Truth. That's just a simple matter of physic. Stepped attenuator gets very close (very clean window)
Hearing is believing.
;-)
Preamp sucks.
High quality stepped attenuator; ladder or series, installed in the amp is the way to go. Yes, you need to drill a hole on the chassis of your amp, else you lose too much.
IC needs to be also short to prevent capacitance built-up.
My tube amps need on 300mV to give full power. What is yoyrs?
However in most cases where the input sensitivity of the amp is low (1.2mV is pretty standard), a preamp does improve dynamics, but still loses openness and liquidity.
YMMV obviously.
I have used a Bottlehead SEX amp with the Truth and had no issue driving it to full output with the Truth.
Now I have a Transcendent T16 OTL and have more gain then I ever will be able to use, no matter what I have hocked up to the Truth. Sorry, don't know how much power the T16 needs to be driven to full power.
I guess the one big draw back of the Truth is that it has no Gain. However, for most of us that is no issue.
Bellow is some of the manufacturer's comments:
It has an input impedance too high to measure, output impedance is a couple ohms, bandwidth is to 60Mhz, slew rate is a couple hundred V/microsecond.
There are no capacitors or resistors in the signal path. There is no potentiometer in the signal path.
It uses photo cells to control the volume. It does not use optocouplers.
It is an "active" device and suffers none of the "problems" that "passive volume control/pre amps" have. It can drive long (30 feet) cables with ease.
Marketing Blurb!!! Never heard any manufacturer who said that their product is inferior.
"It uses photo cells to control the volume."
If you have a scope, check the square wave performance.
Any resistor type (step ladder or series) pot will give square wave performance 100 times better than photo cell.
All it is, is that you just happen to find the compensation from this device soothing to your ears.
Enjoy it.
Maybe{A truth}....to you ...But The truth.... not so much...More like one mans o-pine...sounds like fun....$899...Looks like all rat-shak parts....All i see pramps as are EQs....your saying this is less of a EQ...cool....This Well make the Klipsch sound good....goodluck
I remember seeing that 'Truth' It was either the prototype or one of the first once, that the owner drew these symbols on.No EQ is the best EQ - setting when it comes to pre-amps or any other part in the signal chain.
But more importantly is NOT to degrade the sound and that's why I love MY Truth.

Less is more!....ok..but every thing is a EQ?...Wire one of the bigest....right after the ROOM...If you set all your Speakers an amps...an your Turth outside...were there is no Room...Wire still has to be used..
This will get you closer To what?...
But most will not go there even if thay like the sound of Your Truth....
My Krell KSL preamp help me get the sound i like...like your geting out of your truth...But in My room...an with my wire ..an with my tube amps there a BIG EQ....most hate tubes...thay say there to EQ,y...Thay like SS amps there better EQs
SO...you say
No EQ is the best EQ - setting when it comes to pre-amps or any other part in the signal chain.
But more importantly is NOT to degrade the sound and that's why I love MY....what ever....Right?
So anyone can say anything...but is it A Truth?
Mybe to them..!
Here just 3 of the BIg EQs i am useing today in the pic....So i gess this is my Truth!...Today anyway.....goodluck
.
Hello KIS;
I wouldn't know how to use a scope, but I know how to listen.
I don't hear any compensation from this device to sooth my ears, all I hear is the most accurate and detailed music.(rest my case)
Thanks. I did not see the review before. Unit sounds like a winner. I need to talk to Ed about this. Thanks again Capt.Z.

Check out his forum.
I have his T-16 OTL, and has been noted throughout the forums, the tubes are driven easily and will probably last a very long time. Seems to be a design philosophy. I have seen this echoed on the Beast threads as well.
I use this OTL to drive a very inefficient pair of DCM Time Windows and they have yet to disappoint!
I also have two of his Grounded Grid preamps and a Tube Tester. All just keep working. Bruce really seems to know his (cough) stuff and designs well.
An ardent admirer.

got a pair of these Trancendent's if your interested.
4 x 6c33b's 100 watt monoblocks.
Wow, you seem to be quite the OTL collector! What are you going to do with all these amps?
I don't want to buy anything now--I just shelled out for a new van den Hul Frog, which seems to be really special. But I'd really like some comments on how all these amps you have compare, if you have the inclination. You seem to have:
NYAL OTL 3's (3 pair)
Futterman H3aa
NYAL--Hammond 509 ?
Transcendent Beast 6C33b (I thought he used to use 509's).
Are they all basically the same circuit? Do they use any power supply regulation?
How do they sound?
By the way, George Kaye, who has helped me with my OTL3's used to offer a conversion service to allow the OTL3's to use 509's, but he says good 509's are hard to get now, so it's not worth it.
I also have a set of Fourier Panthere's they are the most powerful of all the amps, the otl-3's are my favorite to listen to, even at half the power of the Panthere's they sound more controlled top to bottom,
