From Documentation for David Berning ZH-230
The radio frequency re-mapping is implemented using special high-frequency power conversion techniques. The high-voltage, low-current tube impedance-plane is re-mapped to the high-current speaker impedance-plane through a special transformer at a constant RF carrier frequency of 250 kHz (500 kHz for the ZH230). Because the audio signal is riding on a carrier, it is not subject to parasitic elements of the transformer that would otherwise distort the audio signal. There is no low-frequency limit for this impedance conversion, and these amplifiers are dc-coupled, with the exception of a small, high-quality, dc-blocking capacitor at the input of the amplifier to prevent the amplification and application to the speaker of any dc that might be present at the input.
The impedance matching in the ZH amplifier is precisely determined by the effective turns ratio of the RF conversion transformers. Both the push and pull portions of the amplifier are handled in a symmetric fashion, as they are in a conventional transformer-coupled amplifier, and negative feedback is not required to force the positive-output current capability to be similar to the negative-output current capability.

And the objective performance for this Berning impedance transfer, using basically transmission line technology if I tried to put it in as simple words possible, is dynamite!

I'm going to get (if they're cheap) two Gaga Guitar Amps, Milbert Amplifiers - a David Berning company, that operate on the same principle, and try then as mono-blocks.

You know high Audio is dieing.....Shops going out of bizz every where..an the OTL site is dead....but people here like Ralph would put any one dOWN IS MIND BLOWING...IT LIKE A JOKE... the TOP is not good a nuf for Ralph .... goodluck with your Bs... An lew not all think that Ralphs preamp an amps is still king..But we all no your in for life...even if you amps are your mod..Here what i see every day..Haha
I like my MP1. I don't think it's perfect, but I especially don't think it "stinks". And this makes me an evil toady to Ralph. You got it. I have no imagination or will of my own. Shame on me.
If you or bjh want to discuss the shortcomings of the MP1 and MP3, lets do it. But if he says it stinks, where is the basis for discussion? I do have to admit that I had no idea about the "Gaga" or what it is. Never heard of it until this moment. I am already on record saying that I like and admire David Berning and his amplifiers.
-easily one of the most innovative designers in high end audio today.
Lucky man. I have to wait for the summer instead.
After almost 30 years there has been snow and cold in Rome.
Nevertheless I did not left my bike in the parking slot.

Luca, if that is your home, it is very beautiful.
Thank you for your comment.
Actually this is not my house, I live in an apartment on the fifth floor of an 8 story building some miles away.
This is the 'dream house' of a dear friend of mine who has personally built this wood house (very close to the house where he lives) for meeting with friends and for family parties.
We convene here (with families) almost every week for some barbecue party and/or to relax around the fire.

Another free ad?
How could possibly be that a tube circuit using a RF transformer becomes OTL?
IMHO the referred amplifier belongs to a new class of his own (after A, A/B, C and all other conceivable variants), but it is certainly not OTL.

Barking up the wrong tree - If I knew David Berning I wouldn't be shy about it!

Fear this? Ralph you need help...geting people in to big money highend.
bgh offered an insult to 6AS7_6SN7. It was personal and uncalled for.As far as the amp goes I've got no worries about that. I just don't see why a person can't be civil.

"bgh offered an insult to 6AS7_6SN7"
Yet you seem to have missed the insult he delivered to me ... "Another free ad?"
(Mind you I'm being generous, after all you piped in with a "Yup!")
I any case I take the insinuation that I am posting a free Ad as an insult ... YMMV
(as for having the moderator remove I've no problem with that ... for that matter I have no further interest in this forum)

Not concerned much with the 'free ad' thing- I don't see it that way anyway. But the post seems like it should have been over in the 'Amps/Preamps' forum to begin with- that is why it drew a comment from 6AS7_6SN7.

6AS7_6SN7 did, and you then chose to insult him.
I have no problem with debate and different opinions, but I do have a problem with people that lack manners.

Ok man, I love your amp, best I ever heard (the preamp stinks however) but for you to make that comment ... come on! This the Atma-Sphere forum after all.
ROTFL

Lew makes a good point as does 6AS7_6AS7. The Berning, while being a brilliant design, is also not an OTL. An OTL will not have semiconductors and a transformer (whether air core or iron core) in its output, in fact an OTL will not have any impedance matching devices other than the power tubes themselves. The Berning amps fail on all three counts. That does not take away from the amp itself though. Its just that it is simply incorrect to classify it as an OTL.
Berning admitted in a letter to Positive Feedback nearly 15 years ago that his design is not an OTL. His approach allows for Zero Hysteresis in the output transformer (hence the 'ZH' aspect of his model numbers). However he pointed out in his letter that it was difficult to explain the idea of zero hysteresis, but he found that people understood the idea of OTL, so he went with that. Fifteen years of marketing and arguing later, this fact has not changed.
I would challenge you on the preamp comment though: "Oh, no! Don't take me. Wait a little 'till the big Billy Goat Gruff comes. He's much bigger."
Ok for you to say the Atma-sphere preamp "stinks" categorically but not ok for Ralph to say "yup" in response to a post made by a 3rd person who has no conflict of interest either way.
Why would it make you so angry for someone to say simply that he does not think the Berning amp is a true OTL? That argument has been going on for 10 years, and it has no bearing on whether or not the Berning amps sound good, which they do. Oh, and you are, to put it in a genteel way, incorrect as to your opinion of the Atma-sphere preamp. (You are aware that there are two different models, I presume. Do you hate them both?)
