I need a break away form my desk, and you've just given me a good reason to help the stats on consumer spending. Thanks, Mike, for the rec on this Ray Brown -- it's not one that I would necessarily have noticed. BTW, my brother (Bill) and I are planning on going to the Chris Potter date at the Vanguard this Thursday. Hope to see you there! Regards, Mike

Follow Ups:
Hope you like the Ray Brown CD, Mike. Hope it's not too straightforward for you. I think you like things kind of adventurous, and this doesn't really blaze any new trails. Truth be told, I recommended it especially for Don T who was looking for a key to open the door to jazz for him. I figure it's great jazz for anyone either familiar with jazz or not, whether one understands or 'gets' jazz or not. I think the beauty of this music is just inescapable. The beauty of great playing, great sounding instruments, and good taste generally transcend genres. As to Chris Potter this Thursday at the Vanguard... I guess if my arm was twisted, I could be convinced to get down there. :-) Hmmmm... Chris Potter... Village Vanguard.... What's not to like? I saw him there not long ago (with Dave Douglas), and he was a real treat. I'm taking Friday off from work too, so Thursday will be ideal. I'll look for you. You going to the early set? I feel pretty certain that on a Thursday night, for an extra $10 they'll let the early set crowd stay over for the second set... a nice bargain when it happens.
We'll probably make the later set (starts at 9:oo?). I didn't get out over lunch, so I'm picking up the Ray Brown -- and maybe the new Mark Whitfield and new Ralph Peterson -- this evening. Hey, I don't mind some nice, relaxing, melodic jazz every now and then! Makes my wife happy, too! --M
