And yes, I do have several copyrights to musical compositions.
Unfortunately, no hits...yet :(
I have several myself; maybe they'll be worth a little bit after I'm dead. I have always wondered how they decide what is original, acceptable, etc. They have to at least look at what's there, don't they? Would they let you copyright Mary Had a Little Lamb? How about a set of chord changes (which are specifically non-copyrightable)? I understand the gist of your post, just annoying that they can't at least take a few seconds to determine at the most fundamental level what they're dealing with. Of course, the price of copyrights would rise exponentially, wouldn't it?

"just annoying that they can't at least take a few seconds to determine at the most fundamental level what they're dealing with."I think this is a much more difficult task than we may think.
I assume they probably get a few thousand copyright requests on a weekly or monthly basis. For people to sit down and listen to each composition would be an unrealistic task. Also, they would need expertice in music and law. And yes, you could copyright Mary Had A Little Lamb" but it likely wouldn't hold up in court which is where these issues are addressed, not at the copyright office.
