When are they going to wake up and not let World Cup matches, especially in the single elimination round, get decided by penalty kicks? It's a disgrace in my opinion, whoever you were rooting for!!!
Certainly off-topic, but I just finished watching the Spain-Ireland match; and I'm guessing that prompted your post. What else can they do? The teams are dog-tired during the sudden-death period and most play very defensively (unlike Senegal). One suggestion that made sense to me was to reduce the number of players, thus opening up scoring opportunities. Say 5 mins with 10 a side, 5 mins with 9 a side, etc.

-- I altho pothitvely loathe those awful penalties--could do anyone a nasthty injury--ban them I thay--so there!!Moi
Or pull the goalies that would be pretty interesting!!! If fatigue is the issue then take a three hour break or even play the next day. A World Cup match should be decided by a goal from the field, not by some stupid shootout which proves nothing. I'd rather see a sudden death with no goalies than a ridicluous shootout. What a glorious thing it would have been for the Irish to advance! Oh well.
The rules have changed too much in the last years without solving the major problems.
In the past there was enough time for second matches in case of draw. Nowadays TV rules...
The biggest shame was the 1994 final (in the US). It was the first time the title was decided thru penalties. If it wasn't TV perhaps the final, at least, could have a second match.

Jorge
