I had heard a couple of cuts from Parker with Strings on a best of album in the late 60's. Sometime later (mid 70's) I decided I wanted the album. I gave the necessary cash to my girlfriend and sent her in to buy it. Just didn't want to be seen at the counter. Some sort of internal jazz police I guess.
Parker With Strings IS jazz (why? cuz I say so!)Unlike most "With Strings" recordings (which became obligatory after Parker did it) this is more than a "plays pretty" album. All the things Parker brought to the bop revolution are there on this album. He just weaves them around the strings and smooths some of the sharp edges.
Strings or not, 3 notes and you know its Bird.
