Can someone recommend some high-quality blues recordings on CD. I have a few recordings from John Hammond, Robben Ford, and John Lee Hooker and I am hungry for more.
nt.
"Just Like You" & "Slow Down"
These are must haves. Also "Dot Com Blues by Jimmy Smith
Try some James Harman. He's got a way of finding some pretty incredible guitarists and blows a mean harp..I'm tellin' ya!!
A few to look for are the "Extra Napkins" and "Mo `Nakins Please" discs, and also the "Do Not Disturb". James' can really sing too.
This stuff will make you wanna get up and stomp your feet and bring a smile.
Don't forget the singers, harp players and piano players. Here are some essentials who don't play guitar:Howlin' Wolf
Little Walter
Otis Spann
Koko Taylor
Big Mama Thornton
Johnnie Johnson
Paul Butterfield
Charlie Musselwhite
Bessie Smith
Pinetop Perkins
Big Joe TurnerThere are more, of course, but I think you already have suggestions for about 150 essential records. That's a good start.
Get your mojo working!

......they sorta left out all the old acoustic originals. The very first Blues LP I ever heard was a Vanguard recording of Mississippi(sp??)John Hurt. That did it for me. Bought a Martin D-28 and never looked back. I played all over the place for a few years....picking up along the way a 00-28 Martin, 1928 Weyman 6 string (which I actually still have), a 1923 Sears mail order 6 string, an early 50's Stella 12 string, and a Yamaha 12 string. Other old acoustic legends...Rev Gary Davis...Carolina player....very complex stuff
Blind Lemon jefferson.....1st black man to ever make any money making music from record sales!!
Charlie Patton
Tommy Johnson
Robert Johnson.....author of many legendary blues classics
Lonnie Johnson...probably the best all-around Blues musician (actually played for Duke Ellington for a short time!!)
Huddie Leadbetter(Leadbelly)
Tampa Red.....the King of the National Guitar
Memphis Mini
Bukka White...another National player
Fred McDowell
Mance Lipscomb
Lightning Hopkins
Big Bill Broonzy
I could think of alot more, but I'm getting dizzy. I gave most all of it up for hours of scale & arppegio excercises and a hand made classical number by Spanish Luthier Paulino Bernabe.....but I still get the ol Weyman 28 out from time to time and do my John Hurt & Fahey impersonations!!
The Charter's book is still a great reference.

Nice ones! Too many folks think "electric chicago" blues and nothing else. Or worse, "blues" by Eric Clapton and John Hammond (yawn). Some favourites:
Lighnin' Hopkins: Complete Aladdin Recordings,
Lighnin' Hopkins: Mojo Hand: Lightnin' Hopkins Anthology,
Lighnin' Hopkins: The Complete Prestige/Bluesville Recordings,
Lighnin' Hopkins: Goin' Away
Eddie James "Son" House: Father of the Delta Blues: The Complete 1965 Session
Leadbelly: Absolutely the Best
Leadbelly: King of the 12-String Guitar
Josh White: Josh White Blues Singer 1932-1936
Big Joes Williams: Nine String Guitar Blues
My faves. Electric blues. Also the very latest Chess Blues reissues. There are a few threads on here about specific Blues recordings. Check them out with the search feature.
tune into KLON.ORG on sat and sun at 2pm to 7pm. doug mcleod (yes, THAT doug mcleod) hosts 'nothin but the blues' there and youll get PLENTY of ideas from listening to that show.

Goin down town gonna see ma gal...
:)
Obviously, you've misspent your youth. :-)
I'm not a blues freak, but this guy was amazing. Great shredder guitar playing, something like Jimmy Page on steroids. This double CD is also well-recorded.
dh
go to www.westcoastblues.comsome great cd's there, including Clarence "Guitar Sims".
A little more mellow than Buddy Guy, but excellent recording quality, try Eric Bibb. The one with a Taj Mahal duet has a couple of tracks that put Robert Cray in mind.

Alligator has put together a number of samplers, with a lot of their artists on each. Try the 20th and 25th Anniversary 2-CD sets as great introductions to the blues. Also KILLER CD's: Buddy Guy, "Damn Right I Got The Blues" and Luther Allison, "Reckless". These two will rip you up!
Guy's version of "Five Long Years" gives Eric Clapton a good schooling. I love playing it right after my wife plays E.C.'s version.
You should absolutely have "Showdown", the album with Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland and Robert Cray. Don't hesitate. Grab this the very next time you see it. And pick up some Stevie Ray Vaughn while you're at it, because he learned a lot from Collins and other Texas bluesmen. You can also hear Lighnin' Hopkins in his playing, so pick up some Lightnin' if you are looking for good early stuff.Oh, and don't forget the Kings: B.B., Albert and Freddy. I like Albert best.
And get everything else that was mentioned below.

excellent pressing (cd)
(though skip "Start w/ Soul"). AYH won the WC Handy award deservedly, a big rich voice. For contrast, Kelly Joe Phelps--simpler, slide guitar.
".....(though skip "Start w/ Soul"). AYH won the WC Handy award deservedly, a big rich voice....."But the cover is sooo coooll !!! Alvin's local and so I've seen and HEARD him a dozen times.......everytime different. Last time he opened up with an electrified "Big Mamma's Door" and then went right into Buffalo Springfield's/Neil Young's "Mr Soul". He had an array of vintage Japanese "Knock-off guitars that he had extensively modified. He used to work on guitars for a living. Whether playing his 1937 Stella 12 String or going electric......he's always puts his volume up to 11......bring cotton for ears. I love it!!
Tom B. (usually a classical guy)
I personally don't like "Soul" but it seems a newbie would best be served by "Mama" or"Territory."
Bruce,I would heartily agree with you on that one. Alvin's an acquired taste nowdays.......I love him, but I could see some folk's not appreciating the direction he's taking his music. I just carried away, when Alvin and I start babbling about obscure acoustic guitars in between his breaks. He wasn't even aware that Weyman produced my model of guitar. Weyman was a mandolin maker by and large.

I have Wicked Grin already. I get the wicked grin every time I hear HeartAttack and Vine. All your recommendations are on the short list. I'll be picking them up soon. Everyone else's input has been appreciated also. They say you are the Authority on the Blues. Would you comment on any of the following Artists you think are exceptional.

James Harmen-great harp player/singer that usually surrounds himself with talent.I still enjoy his debut effort on Rhino Records,Those Dangerous Gentlemen.Or perhaps Live In 85.They both may be OOP but worth looking for.
Ron Thompson And The Resistors-A usually unheard of,but very talented string bender.I have Treat Her Like Gold and Resister Twister.

Just a couple of months ago, they released three two-lps-on-one-cd reissues. The Real Folk Blues and More Real Folk Blues from Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker in 24 bit sound if I remember the tag on the packaging; the booklet tells nothing about remastering. In any case, the sound is very clean and clear and the music is very present without being forward, on my system. I haven't heard the JLH. The Wolf and the Muddy are just great. This stuff is from the mother load of prime blues. Highly influential and highly enjoyable.
Any Robert Lucas on Audioquest label.
