Time July 20, 1942
... a tragic life, nearly randomly cut off by the senseless barbarism of the era.I'm still exploring his complex music.

If you haven't yet discovered them, his "Preludes and Fugues" are in the Top 5 for solo piano works in the 20th century. Ashkenazy's recording is first rate. I also have Nikolayeva on Hyperion (much slower, very intense), as well as Jarrett (pretty, but not Russian).
Insightful performances that rival Ashkenazy's, excellent sound, and a dirt cheap price (Internet vendors are selling the two disc set for around $10).
I have a very scratchy LP of those preludes (USSR, RCA Gold Seal with Inger Wikstrom) but will follow up re the Askenazy.I listened to his Piano Concerto no 2 (Bernstein playing) and his Cello Concerto (Rostropovich) this afternoon - heavenly music which sounds better and better each time.
Thanks
John

If you can, get listen to Capriccio 10892. Shosty VC #1 with Spivakov and a searing performance of the Suite for Orchestra from Lady Macbeth with Conlon conducting.
