Shorter is not just a great player, but an excellent composer as well. I lean towards his earlier work, especially the 60's Blue Note releases. That being said, he still has it, I saw him live a few months back and he was great. His quartet consisted of Danilo Perez, Brian Blade and John Patitucci.I recently picked up his 2nd or 3rd release, entitled 'Second Genesis' on the Charly label. I highly recommend it for Shorter fans, it was a real find for me. Another great quartet, Cedar Walton, Art Blakey & Bob Cranshaw. Hard bop & driving featuring mostly Shorter originals & a few standards.
I think that Second Genesis[Charly is a boot label, it was a VeeJay date] was way weaker than the stuff he did for BN and later w/Miles. Night and day.
Night Dreamer and Nefertiti, man.
