Hello:Stumbled on to a rather good folk(y) singer last week. I picked up a CD called "Shifting Sands of Time" by a group calling themselves "The Wayfaring Strangers". This group of musicians is the brainchild of a violinist called Matt Glaser, playing an eclectic mix of bluegrass, jazz (out-there, IMHO), and other forms (including a klezmer-esque clarinet). Most of the vocals are by a woman called Lucy Kaplansky, with harmonies by Jennifer Kimball. It's a pretty good album IMHO.
SO, anyway... these two women provide remarkable harmonies (e.g., give a listen to "Memories of You", described in the album notes as "scary"). Based on the album notes, I am assuming that it's Lucy Kaplansky who's the "star". I've read a bit about her at the usual places (artist's website, All Music Guide). I am looking for a recommendation of a good album of hers to try.
Thanks as always for your attention.
all the best,
mrh

That's my and my wife's favorite disc of hers. I and a couple of other long time folk music/ singer-songwriter friends think Cry, Cry, Cry is a dog. I think it has one good cut on it.
Try Cry,Cry,Cry on the Razor& Tie label. It features Lucy Kaplansky, Dar Williams & Richard Shindell. Really excellent.
I've seen Lucy live, but have not heard many recordings of her's. I kind of like "Ten Year Night". Another worth checking is her collaberation with Richard Shindell and Dar Williams on "Cry, Cry, Cry" (Both Richard and Dar are worth checking out as well.) Lucy has an interesting bio, in that she has a doctorate degree in psychology and gave up that career and go into music full time. Kind of gutsy move.Jennifer Kimball is a fine singer also, and was the other half of a duo with Johnatha Brooke known as "The Story". Johnatha also has one or two nice solo works out.
I usually judge a new (to me) singer/songwriter by the company he or she keeps. I check out who shows up on the albums or with whom he/she worked with in other projects. I figure if this person is good enough to perform together with some of them, he or she may be worth checking out. Lucy can be found backing up, or singing with many other great performers (IMO), or has them show up on hers cds.

Does that make it Cry,Cry, Cry, Cry, Cry, Cry???Bruce
based on the songs i recently heard her sing on mountain stage, i'd certainly avoid her latest offering. aside from a song about 9/11, fifteen minutes after her set i couldn't recall a thing she had done...in roughly the same vein as kaplansky, i was far more impressed with performances on the show by sara guthrie, caitlin cary, and two sisters from australia in a band called the waifs.
