I agree with the recommendations so far. I'd be concerned though that the young man might come to think jazz was dry, dusty and dead, so I'd add a tune each from some of the better and/or more "out there" players from the 1980s/90s/2000s:

-- Joe Henderson
-- Bobby Watson
-- David Murray
-- Joshua Redman

I'd also include one of the better tunes of Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, Cannonball Adderley, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Johnny Hodges, and perhaps Zoot Sims and/or Dexter Gordon.
