The other day I dug out the one and only recording I own by this woefully underrated performer, "Thoughts of Dar Es Salaam" on the Arabesque label and it has hardly left my CD player since. Accompanied by bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Billy Hart, Tapscott, who apparently has mentored a number of young musicians, walks a fine line between traditional bop/post-bop playing and a percussive, near-atonal approach, but manages always to avoid going overboard on the latter. His essential style is somewhat reminiscent of Monk, Randy Weston, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Nichols & Don Pullen.Just curious who else has heard and enjoyed this fine pianist & this CD, and also if anyone has heard a CD titled "Aiee! The Phantom" from 1995 which has Marcus Belgrave, tpt, Abraham Burton, as, Andrew Cyrille, dr, & Reggie Workman, bs?
Follow Ups:
Thanks all for the input. Nice to know there are others out there familiar with his work, but I note that references to Mr. Tapscott are in the past tense. Does that mean he is no longer with us?
There is a discography of his work here:
Thank you for the information, sad though it is. This will just provide more incentive to get more of his recordings.
At stores in the Bay Area, it is quite easy to find Tapscott LP reissues. For example, there is a series titled Horace Tapscott Sessions Volumes 1 to x. At Amoeba, these new LPs are only $7 each! What a great way to discover the genius of Tapscott.
I find it to be more compelling than "Thoughts of Dar Es Salaam".Thanks, shrugs, for recommending "The Dark Tree Vol 1 and 2". I've been looking at that for a while...
Tapscott was a giant who never got a lot of press since he stayed in Cali all his life.
I HIGHLY recommend Aiee! The Phantom. It is much better than Thoughts Of. The horns add textures that are beautiful.
The one to get is The Dark Tree Vol 1 and 2 on hatOlogy. Easiest place to get this is from
