This one is a pretty good introduction. I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for, but this book contains a mix of music history, biographical info, and theory(light on theory).
Follow Ups:
I read this book as well, and it is informative, but doesn't get too deep into the technical. In fact, there are deeper technical discussions set up as sidebars in each chapter, which you can read or not. The book goes through the major movements and then profiles most of the key composers of each period.
