  ...try Ernst Borsamski on Vanguard. He the Man! And do not neglect Scherchen. For a performance in which the rhythms are sprung and the melodies are sung like in no other, go to Kreutzer and the Danish Radio Orchestra (which I bought on cassette). Then forget Walter!

  Is the closest we get to how Mahler (and his contemporaries) did it.
  He pretty much conducted the music the Mahler himself prepared and led
  performances. He attended rehersals of the 4th, and faithfully annotated his copy if the score with everything Mahler did. No wonder Mahler loved him.
