Well, since I have, mostly, a physical music collection, I'm thinking that I need some kind of dividers (do they sell these) and, perhaps, I can make my own, (but how?) or buy something (but what?)Any suggestions? I have both an LP collection and a CD collection and simple shelfs, about 900 CD's and 300 LP's.
Also, I'm trying to figure out how to categorize music, such as:
Vocal
Pop Vocal
Rock & Roll
Latin
Irish
Musicals
Classical Composer
Classical Performer
Jazz Modern
Jazz Vocal
Jazz Big Band
Jazz Traditional??

On the vinyl side of the house, I've got it sorted sort of like this: Audiophile pressings, Japanese pressings, other imports, and WLPs. I don't categorize the genres of the music but do alphabetize them.
CD's are stored alphabetically.
"Man, that mouse is Awesome." - Kaemon (referring to Jerry, of Tom and Jerry fame)
I threw out the CD jewel cases.
I've got about 300 CDs and 1800 LPs. Plus more the 500 lossless free downloads - mostly concert records. I spent years trying to figure out the genre thing but really all my music is pop rock including the stuff I would consider jazz - just doesn't work for me for organization (I can make playlist however I want). I only have 2 categories (other than format) - compilations/soundtracks and artists.
I donated that CD. I hear that he knows a lot about the music business and married Diana Krall. Other than that??
A mess but it works. Had to pull comps and soundtracks off the vinyl shelves to make room for new vinyl. Inbox middle shelf right, outbox middle shelf left + floor + more floor not shown. Comps/soundtracks bottom shelf.
Box sets, section for comps the rest in A-Z order, with Bob Dylan being under B and John Lennon under J.
Sections for box sets, 10 inchers and 45s on top. Artists on inner shelves same order as CDs. All vinyl has been digitized into lossless files, organized and stored with CD rips on a harddrive and several backups. I've recently completed an inventory where all music CDs and vinyl is in a spreadsheet - Artist, Album, Year, Format. Also have fields for label, matrix, etc. where I may store additional information.
This is good for cd's from Ikea. I have about 8 of them and they are great. With googling you can find Ikea lp shelves as well. I also organize based upon genre. Metal, classic rock, punk, ambient, etc. but that is more a personal preference.
For me it is random, wherever I find my attention is what I put on.
And it works just fine with me.
But damn, I cannot entertain worth beans, because I ask what type of music do they like and then I disappear for half an hour or more and, then, by that time they've lost their interest completely. Non-audiophiles, obviously ;-)
I have LP classical by composer, jazz and pop separately by primary artist, Christian by artist, various other by chorus group, etc.
CD same
we have 1800 LPs and about 300 CDs, but have no trouble with finding stuff yet. Bullethead doesn't entertain, and suggests streaming. I am streaming Spotify Lalo Symphonie Espagnole, Vengerov violin, but preceded that by wonderful old CD of Beethoven 3rd symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, led by Dohnanyi. Spotify makes things quite handy, and to my ear, it's improving in sound thru my Google Chromecast Audio.
It doesn't matter really to me either.
I don't entertain. Maybe once in a blue moon, I have streaming services for that. Typical ganja smoking experience. Not too often.
