One could do far worse than studying Les Claypool for bass. Claypool, Wooten and Clark are just about as good as it gets. As far as I know, anyway.

Well there is that. I would be well pleased to play much of anything with some reasonable skill. And since we mentioned Claypool I feel obliged to post the video that made me pay attention to him in the first place. If you like weird there's always Mr Krinkle
At one point Claypool had found himself in a band called Oysterhead. If you can find live material of that band it really is incredible.
Good call. I had forgotten to look into Oysterhead and did so because of you reminding me. Their studio album is pretty good but doesn't translate as well as a live performance I think. That said... I would snap tickets to that show.
It you can catch somewhere "shadow of a man" either the night of Sept 11, 2001 or the day after live on the net.Incredible.

I did not like the studio album. Youtube has some great cuts of them live.
