I'll post a provisional tally tomorrow (i.e., who wants what), so if you haven't already spoken up, please post your yay or nay. I'll cut off the voting at EOD, Wednesday, July 26th, and then post a final tally which I'll forward on. If this is really what we want to do, I think Rod et al are willing to make it happen. So as I say, please speak up if you haven't done so already.

Whereas, I will likely visit a dedicated jazz forum rarely if at all. If proponents of jazz wish to limit exposure of casual listeners (I have 50 jazz CD's, 500+ classical), okay. I don't get it.
What most bothers me here is regular postings of Youtube links without any commentary. You know, if I want to see Youtube, I'll go to effin Youtube. Here I expect to find discussion of music, not braindead "watch this cuz I did." That's what 90% of pop music forum is, and it's a complete waste of time.

Yep, pretty much sums it up for me as well.
Personally while I find some commentary entertaining I'm hear for the music. The music speaks for itself. Many people over the years find that I have very good taste in the music I recommend so I plan on continuing my brain dead postings of what I think are exceptional recordings both written and youtube music. I think this sort of thing may be particularly helpful to people with the least experience. The shear amount of music out there makes it impossible for people to sift through it all, experienced or not. Brain dead postings of recommendations without much commentary and youtube postings by a particular person may resonate with others with similar taste so as to facilitate additions to their collections. Feel free to ignore my youtube postings madisonears. Good resistor review though. I'll try them someday. T456

You took this personally, but that's okay. I do ignore almost all of your Youtube stuff. You see, I also have good taste.
Glad you enjoyed the resistor stuff.

It looks like I will soon be free from the Borg Collective. A soul will be invited to AA's corpus. We will soon have at the very very very least equal status with Hip Hop, Hip Pop, whatever. Halla-f......Luya. (just kidding about the "equal" thing). T456

Yes, the split is a good idea.

It aint broke as far as I can see
...that jazz people are more disinterested in classical music than we classical music people are indifferent to jazz.
I am happy to entertain opinions about both.
. . . the discussion here was being monopolized somewhat by the classical posters - so I'm sympathetic to the jazzers if they want to set up shop on their own.
then there should be a "Chris from Lafayette" forum!

I'll also note that there are others here who have more overall posts than I do - but they seem to spread them over more forums. I guess that's the secret! ;-)
.
I like to keep up with both genres, so I can do both in one forum, versus having to go to two forums.
(There does not seem to be a lot of traffic on this forum to warrant having two forums, IMHO anyway.)
My two cents worth.

yes
I can see why the mods might be hesitant to do this, since classical lovers dominate the forum as currently constructed. But that's why I rarely go here, since classical music doesn't do it for me.
Musical tastes are personal and varied. I remember working in a record store in the late 70's when bad rock music and disco dominated, and one day a very nice young man (younger than me and I was 22 then) came in and ordered the entire Barbra Streisand catalog. Some of my co-workers laughed at the notion but I told them that anyone who has a passion for music should be encouraged. Jazz lovers like me would love a home away from the classical and rock folks. Perhaps a jazz and blues forum might draw enough crossover to keep things open and fresh?
Just my 2 cents
'Bout time
+1 rwa. Hip hop and no jazz forum? Truly shocking.

a silly title and unclear concept that has never really caught on in a board that generates little attention.

Actually rwa3 , I wouldn't say it's crap. Crap can be used to grow things. Rap , when played to plants makes them shrivel up and die.

A diabolical inference is still that. Diabolical. The fact that it generates little attention gives me a bit of hope for the human race. Just a bit mind you.

As suggested below, I vote "no". I like one-stop-shopping and don't want to have to suss out sometimes-arbitrary distinctions (e.g. where to discuss Gershwin). But I will visit the new forum if it's created.
Happy listening,
Jim

I think you would be an excellent moderator. And (knock on wood!) there really aren't that many problems which arise - please consider it.

I'm a classical trained jazz musician - no division here. Interested equally in both and prefer a bigger forum with more subscribers and variety.
I am classically trained but dreamt about playing a jazz piano someday.
So far I haven't succeeded in either but I feel these two genre were somehow connected.
NT
I'm a "yes."
Yes, if Chris agrees to moderate BOTH boards and post his 'babe' posts on the Jazz board, otherwise no. ;-)
Just because.
I'm okay either way :)
I can go either way. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have all the jazz stuff concentrated in one spot. I don't get much out of threads discussing the latest warhorse recordings or "babe musicians", but I see some pretty good classical-related posts as well. We slowly seem to be getting dragged collectively into the 21st Century lately with slightly more emphasis on music not over 100 years old...a positive trend, I think.
I can see separating rock out from everything else the way has been done here for years. There are a lot of listeners who care for nothing else (many of whom are not particularly good at articulating why that is), and they would probably create friction on a more wide-ranging board.
But consider this: If we segregate jazz and classical, where will posts on Tango or Bulgarian folk choirs go? Would there be a rock-only, jazz-only, and then everything else board? I see the possibility for a large cross-section of music to disappear from discussion here entirely.
I'm interested in ALL good music. I see further segregation by style as potentially as much a hindrance as an aid.

Highly recommend it!
I don't know enough about Jazz to frequent a Jazz board, and as a vinyl guy I made my choice to collect classical because it's CHEAP and PLENTIFUL, so that's just how I roll.
But I DO enjoy your posts here and will miss them if you guys go.
I check out most Fora from time to time, no biggie.
Info you don't care about is just a click away.
What's the problem, don't wanna waste the one second it'd take to click on Jazz?
I'm not sure I understand why you wouldn't visit and enjoy a separate jazz forum?
I will still participate here....sort of like the amp/pre amp SET forums. Its not all or nothing for me. It is not like this forum is classic music only.
...
discussing jazz here can and will do so.
Here.
It's an effort thing.
Given that, it makes this a more interesting place overall.
Since it DOES work here when pursued why fix something that ain't broke?
It's not the venue, it's the act.
I love jazz; discuss it HERE along with other non-rock musics.
So, that's a nay.
