Powell's catalogue is limited as well as lack of reissue could be that Audiophile labels avoided them due to less than stellar recording quality. I don't have facts in front of me but some of the Amazing Bud Powell albums are either pre Van Gelder days or even if it was early Gelder recordings of piano sound like covered by a blanket. This can be said for Erroll Garner, too. ( another of my fave ) Also both players sang along the tunes which many cant stand. I don't mind that at all. It gives humanity!
It's sad to see how young he was when he died. ( only 41! )
I wish that Music Matters redid this Vol.1 Amazing Bud Powell.
Music Matters did a marvelous job reissuing the Scene Changes ( finally no mud! ) but the program wise, I prefer his earlier releases.
Follow Ups:
Nice pics! What was his illness ?
but I reckon he was also into narcotics.
or Traumatic Brain Injury resulting from a beating 1/21/1945 by Philadelphia police was Bud's main issue and the long lasting sequellae from this. You can find this incident and so very much more in the outstanding memoir " Dance of the Infidels A Portrait of Bud Powell " by Francis Paudras.
but I bet what was on his Death Certificate might have said 'Natural causes'. :/
Per wiki:
Powell was hospitalized in New York after months of increasingly erratic behavior and self-neglect.
On July 31, 1966, he died of tuberculosis, malnutrition, and alcoholism.
TY- kuma.
