"Quintessence" is in my Top Five all time favorite jazz recordings. Everyone on it plays superbly, but both Kenny Burrell and Harold Land, an excellent but sometimes overlooked tenor player, are especially good.
Follow Ups:
What else did he do?
I am not familiar with that tenor at all.
He played on several recordings with the Clifford Brown-Max Roach quintet in the mid-1950s; he preceded Sonny Rollins in that group, but left to return to the West Coast.
He made several recordings with Bobby Hutcherson on the Blue Note and Timeless labels, all worth checking out.
I'd also recommend:
Xocia's Dance on Muse
Mapenzi on Concord with Blue Mitchell
Hear Ye! on Atlantic with Red Mitchell
Thelonious Monk at the Blackhawk on Riverside
Or you can get 6 of his albums, all of them worthy, for less than $20 on that wacky Real Gone Jazz label. (I can usually find Real Gone Jazz reissues at Half Price Books for under $15).
I've always loved the mere sound of Land's saxophone, which almost defined for me what a tenor should sound like.

Get Harold Land - The Fox..... Land was making records into the 1990s and I have some of them. His early 1990s date, Harold Land with Strings is very nice!
Well Geo, even though Madisonears thinks post like this are brain dead I for one am glad you presented the opportuneity for me to listen to this version of this ever lovely tune. Nice stuff. It's very likely that I would have never come across it in a thousand years if you hadn't put it up for mine and others listening enjoyment. Looking forward to sharing more of this great genre called jazz with you and others in our new Jazz Alley forum. I may have a version of Lazy Afternoon worth posting sans much commentary. I was telling someone last week how little connection of words to music I have found. Words and music are two completely different things,IMHO. Thanks for the post. T456

I'm a big Harold Land fan. I have a lotta records he's on, including the Gerald Wilson band LP's. I saw the Hutcherson-Land group live couple times years ago at the Jazz Workshop in Boston, and love the recordings they did together. His playing with Clifford Brown is great too.

Wow surety, that's some pretty high praise. I'll have to spend some time with this recording. My fav of Evans is "You Must Believe in Spring". T456
