Make more room for actual music (except Bruckner, Bruckner's not actual music) posts to stand out.
+1 That would get me more interested in classical music for sure.

I like some jazz some times. So if the posts are in Music Lane, I'm likely to at least look at them.A separate asylum for jazz? Sorry, I'd never visit it. So, I think it would just marginalize jazz even more to put it in a separate asylum.

Pretty strange that you're concerned about a separate forum marginalizing jazz at AA. No offense, but if ya couldn't even be bothered to click on a jazz forum, why should anyone who's actually into jazz care if you're not there?
My last comment regarding jazz was here not long ago. But I also do not comment on many of the classical posts. That doesn't mean I don't read the threads. I don't feel obligated to say something about everything.
But yeah, you are right, jazz folks here probably would not miss me if they lived in a jazz asylum.

Agree about a second forum marginilizing jazz, although I have enough interest in both to lurk in both.
i believe that a separate jazz ward would attract more jazz posts due to the visual search one must do at the MUSIC ward. there are a lot of artists that deserve more exposure like cecile mclorin salvant and kat edmonson. adam rudolph would be another snake path to slither.plus the online jazz stations like kcsm and wbgo can open your perspectives a bit.
from bob dourough to gregory porter, trilok gurtu to kenny burrell, there are fresh things to say and new people to hear these things. let's give it a year and see what happens.

for a second, I thought what on earth Andsnes doing with a stand up bass!
P.S. Edmonson is good. A modern day Eartha Kit sans evil-ness. :)
i've been hearing her since 1954, and she was always hot (i didn't realize it then, i was ten). Papermate pens had just arrived on the market. shed is just so AGELESS.

I have a record with that tune on it but the YouTube video version is sooooo much better!
She's just soooo cute in that video.
We need more than 10 people posting on threads to create a viable forum. I still say leave it as it is.
Two forums could be helpful to both types of music lovers/listeners.
Some general forums, here, have indeed deteriorated because they are too broad, and so have some very focused forums due to lack of membership and/or enthusiasm.
I don't think a dedicated classical forum is in any danger of deteriorating, but my sense is that there are a lot of jazz lovers out there on AA, who haven't posted about the two forum issue yet, and as I look at record re-seller adds and reviews in the hi-fi press and members systems on AA, I do believe there is a large potential market for a dedicated jazz forum.
What's the point in THAT? ;-)
Besides, there are at least 10 lurkers for every poster.
(yeah, I made that up)

But those who want it seems they don't want to be bothered with classical posts.
Musically, too some jazz musicians are influenced by classical music.
Net net. You are right. There aren't enough people contributing and I don't think more will join in a separate room.
I don't know that some of us don't want to be bothered with classical posts. I think it's more a matter of separate exposure may generate greater interest in jazz.
.
Based on experience I'm just as likely to be wrong.
This place ain't exactly a 1,000 inmate forum. How many guys do ya think post on classical subjects? Mostly the same small group of inmates.I'm hoping a separate jazz forum will attract people who don't like wading thru the classical posts. Its worth a shot IMO.

This may be a forum with a small number of members, but almost all of them have been involved in the classical music scene for a long time. The posts are informative. The discussions are are interesting to me and the replies to the few questions or comments I have made have always been helpful.
I am not experienced in this area of music. However, I am devoted to a few composers and a few of their works, which I play over and over again. When I do find a new composer I like (due to tips, here), I often buy bargain "complete works" albums, store only the works I like, and then if one feels really exceptional to me, I may ask about different performances for future buying purposes. Members, here, have been very helpful to me in this respect, too.
So, I am hoping that a separate jazz forum will result in the same kind of quality discussions and perhaps even improve the focus of the classical membership.
Much Thanks! Chris.
I hope that my thread has at least a little impact in that regard.
I'll even promise to curtail my sarcasm (not). Although I kind of like some of these wordy dissertations on the music I'm not good at them myself. My main thing is to expose and get exposed to great music. Ultimately it's the music that has to speak. It is increasingly difficult for me to find new stuff as I've been around for awhile and am very picky. I'ts quite clear that some people out there have vastly more experience than I. I also think that inexperienced listeners could gain a lot from it. On all to rare occasion my recommendations to the uninitiated were appreciated. Lots of young people don't even know who Chet Baker was. T456

I think you're right about inexperienced people, especially younger ones. It's really distressing these days when I attend concerts or go to clubs to see that virtually every attendee is near my age-which is not young! I really don't know what the answer is because jazz, which has historically had a relatively small audience, gets so little exposure in the mass markets and as a result seems to have an increasingly diminishing following.
