R.I.P. This one hurts.
When Marian McPartland died in 2013 she was so old I didn't realize she was still alive - much as I adored her. This leaves only Renee Rosnes among serious mainstream/post bop female jazz pianists I've listened to over the years. (I don't consider Hiromi or even Toshiko Akiyoshi as mainstream.)
Whoa. I loved Geri Allen, but what about Jessica Williams, Lynne Arriale, Joanne Brackeene and half a dozen others I'll remember as soon as I post this.
Damn, this is terrible news. I heard her at Celebrate Brooklyn a few years ago with Terri Lynn Carrington and Esperanza Spaulding and again two years ago at the amazing tribute to Ornette Coleman. Check out the Jazz Wax obit for a great interview and clips
A great one! R.I.P.
This is a repost of the news report regarding Ms Allen. She was a truly unique pianist. Although, there is a breadth of her work is retained in her recordings, she will be missed.
She was my last JPOTW. Got to see her once live. She was excellent. Too bad. T456

What a loss. Much too young yet.
I never heard of her; obviously, I know not much about current jazz performers--can someone put up a few youtube links to some of her performances that they like?
