Not enough swagger and audacity in the first movt. Even Haitink projected those elements more persuasively in his EMI recording.
The Liverpool's phrasing and articulation under Manze in the 2nd movt are IMHO too "squeaky-clean" to cast a proper spell. The rather dry recording exacerbates the issue, at least for me.
I downloaded a sample of Previn's 1st movement opening (RCA) at HDTT and much preferred it to Manze's.
All that said, the Brit critics love it, even Lebrecht.
Follow Ups:
I'm actually surprised though, because I think Manze conducted all the RVW symphonies a couple of years ago at the Proms - I heard broadcasts of a couple of those performances and I actually thought they weren't bad.
I'm a big fan of Manze's HIP stuff, especially back in his Harmonia Mundi days. His Handel Violin Sonatas, the Biber, etc. are stunning.
. . . my tastes align more to J-Fi in Vivaldi these days! ;-)
And darned if I didn't have a rehearsal this afternoon where one of our local Geigengirlies tried to sneak in the use of a Baroque bow in our Veracini Sonata! My distaste for it was duly pointed out! ;-)

Man, I was thinking Volkswagen was a new record label..........
of DGG on a good day.
Where did you find a download? As a CD it is sold out here in the UK and a re-pressing is awaited I understand. The only download is from Onix' own website but is limited to MP3. They appear to think that offering 320 KS/s is something to boast about :-(
BTW, later recordings in the cycle e.g. the new symphs 3 & 4 have had a rather lukewarm reception from the Britcrits. So I really don't have a burning desire to own it or the earlier issue(s?)in the cycle at the moment but I would like to form a judgement.
The Previn is really excellent. I have an RCA Gold Seal copy on vinyl but the SQ could be better. The Boult is preferable in that respect.
Guess I'm just a sucker for RVW.
I'm happy you guys are still recording his stuff.
Oh, and more BAX please! :-)

10.99 Euros if you have Sublime 15.39 without.
Sound really irritated my ears and they've been feeling really good lately: open and uncongested after months of daily Nasacort.
2nd movement is rather special IMNSHO. I have had this in my QOBUZ favorites for a bit, along with No.3 & No. 4 from the same series, above.
I like what Manze and Royal Liverpool does with RVW in this series.
.
The 2nd was one of the VW symphonies I liked the least, until I heard the Hickox recording of the original version, which is billed as the ONLY recording we will ever have of the original version. The stuff that VW cut from the last movement is to me some of the most moving music in the whole symphony.

Not available for streaming or downloading in the UK. I think this issue was discussed a few months ago?
Of course it is obvious that a symphony by an English composer, played by an English conductor with an English orchestra on an English record label should not be available in England. I mean it stands to reason, eh?
while you still can. ;-)
d'accord :-)
I found it at eclassical. I noticed that when it comes to finding highest available resolution, one has to shop around. I'm often surprised that a 16bit only release offered at one site suddenly appears as a 24bit somewhere else. Makes it fun I guess.
I, too, prefer the luminous EMI Boult over the very good Previn. If we're lucky, Warner will release the whole Boult cycle, though it's a bit uneven.
" If we're lucky, Warner will release the whole Boult cycle, "
They have.
