My fav thus far has been the Italian Qt.
I found a beautiful box set of the Busch (and the Hollywood on Capitol), but found them a bit too cool.
I'll be interested to hear what other people have to say as well.

Me too -- maybe the most extraordinary 1st movt of anything ever!
My current (& admittedly fairly long-standing) faves? -- mostly mentioned already: Yale, Italiano, Berg, Budapest. I heard the Italiano do it live (!) in 1962 & exited afterwards behind a professional pianist who loudly pronounced the whole quartet to be "the most boring music I've ever heard". I mention that in case you were getting too relaxed, jdaniel.

Italian Qt. has always been my go to performance. Have a mono performance of the TATRAI on Telfunken, which is the most explosive of all. My sense(even when I look at the score is that Opus 131 make be closer in drive and dynamics to the Op. 59's and Op. 127 then to Op. 132 and 130(but then I am always changing my mind.) If I did not know the interpretation of the Busch performance, my mind might rest more easily. The last movement of the LASALLE tears my heart out.
Some of the chord progressions in the first movt are so other-worldly and poignant.
You know, jdaniel, I read that Bernstein wanted to conduct that all his life. I empathize with his aspiration (I possess and am forever bothering others to play with me all the string quartets scored for piano duet), and like him I greatly revere the work. But to me his interpretation falls slightly short of those of the very best quartet groups. Then again, he's almost never been my very favorite conductor of anything though that is not meant to be censure; I grew up with and loved his televised music exegeses during the 1950s.
