. . . I do see what you mean about the balance and the "mix". It's an interesting work too - I don't quite have the measure of it yet and I'll need to listen to it more for sure. My general experience with Schnittke's music is very limited, although I've played (accompanied) a couple of his works: the first cello concerto and the catchy little Polka from his Gogol Suite (link below - unfortunately, we didn't have an accordion to help us out in our performance!). Both the kids I've accompanied did very well: the cello concerto guy won the UC Berkeley Concerto Competition a few years ago, and the girl who played the polka a few weeks ago was one of the only two string players who won two of the six prizes in the Etude Club a couple of weeks ago in Berkeley. (All the other winners were pianists - that's of course as it should be, but. . . just sayin'!) Now we've got to be in the "Winners' Concert" on May 15.
Follow Ups:
Chris - I did not know you were a professional pianist. What is your background?
I have a DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) degree from Stanford, but, for over 26 years, I worked full time for two large financial institutions, so that all my music activity was "moonlighting". For the last two years I have not had the distraction of a "real job" and have thus been able to expand my musical activities (mostly piano accompanying).
I apologize for tooting my own horn (yet again!), but here is a uTube video of me playing Piano II in the Poulenc Concerto for Two Pianos with a local orchestra. They're not allowed to identify me however, because Piano I in this performance is a known artist with a contract to a major label. Probably, people can figure out who he is anyway - LOL! (Geez! over 65,000 hits - looks like Martha and friends are about to overtake us though!)
...Jon Nakamatsu and you. In any case, this is nicely performed.
BTW, it's a strange sensation to read some of the comments too, like the one from three months ago, which, if I'm translating the French correctly, reads something like, "The delicacy of the playing is shattering". At the same time, as I've mentioned before, there's a big mistake on the last chord, where some of the orchestra members and I came in a beat early. (We were led astray by the conductor, I think - LOL!) But it's a live, unedited performance, and it is what it is. Madeline (my wife) approves! ;-)
Cool. Go Chris go!
