I've been looking for a modern recording that might equal or surpass Sveshnikov's classic Melodiya version. Pugsley, (EDIT:Jermihov) has paid particular attention to his basso profundo line up and ratio. Recorded by Prof Johnson as well.I just downloaded the Latvian Choir's performance on Ondine today. Beautiful, carefully-prepared performance. No glare in the climaxes. But not the old Russian sound upon which I imprinted.

This DSD recording is an Estonian choir conducted by Paul Hillier, with excellent stereo or multichannel sound. Plenty of Slavic voices, and a wonderful performance.

Estonians are Finnics, and Latvians and Lithuanians are Balts! ;-)
(I suppose there could still be a lot of Slavic voices in Hillier's Choir though!)
Fun fact: did you know that the Estonian national anthem has the same music as the Finnish national anthem? Only the words are different.
And actually, as you can tell, I'm not really insulted - part of my mongrel ethnic heritage (like my Americanized last name) is Lithuanian though. ;-)
