I was just listening to samples of the Symphony's opening, Honeck and Walter side by side, and I still prefer Walter.Walter's string phrasing and articulation is more interesting yet he still manages to keep his eye on the ball: the arrival of GM.
Honeck's conduction seems a bit directionless, strings are less pointed and emphatic and the arrival on GM not as satisfying. His poor little bird on xanax.
Of course, I'm listening to crappy samples. Has anyone lived with the Honeck for awhile? It's been praised to the skys. I'm leaning towards Walter's later stereo recording at HDTT at this point, even though I promised myself I'd support living musicians more.
Honeck's opening sample can be found here:

And Walter's early NYPO comparison can be found

I have a Columbia 2-eye of Walter's reading that I bought some 50 years ago (when it was the 4th) and have enjoyed countless times. I have others, including Szell on Columbia and Epic. The Walter is the one I come back to.
Columbia's recordings of Walter's west coast orchestra were uneven, but I find this one a masterpiece in every respect.
I am going to go listen to it again now. Good night!

you could have 7 Flats?
Or is it 6?
8?
I've heard they are up to 4 Sharps now, but I don't believe it...
I have long favored the Walter performance (and still do) but the sonic superiority of the Honeck recording is overwhelming, especially in multichannel.
I like what Mark Donahue and Matthew Pons did in Detroit with Slatkin. Their Rachmaninoff 3rd is my (or more my system's) ideal: sound not so upfront, and imaging that reminds of Decca's heyday.
Is their Strauss a little more blended with the hall than the Honeck Rosenkavalier? In two channel?
I only listen in 2 channel if there is no alternative.
