It's good to see you back on the forums. I have a question: what is one of the best sonic piano recordings that you know? I am tweaking my 2A3 DIY Tube amp and would like to challenge the amp with some great piano recording(s). Sonics is all that matters at this point, as it will serve a purpose to evaluate tonality, dynamics, etc. I hate the closely miked recordings that have a HUGE piano image reaching from far left to far right. Something realistic with great tonality would be a great tool for my efforts. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Pat

I'm sure there will be plenty of folks that would give some proven audiophile spectacular, but I simply enjoy piano recordings. I appreciate your opinion on those recordings where the instrument is recorded with a sound image that is spread from wall to wall. I hate those as well.
I would suggest Tharaud, because he has some very different choices....Couperin was a complete surprise and it's beautifully recorded. I have all sorts of other gorgeous recordings, but many of those would probably be out of print. I have some French recordings that are over the top that are going for over $150.00 on the used market. Hey....a CDR or flash drive that would even better.....more music.....would solve that problem....free music!!
Always nice to hear from someone that loves that 2A3 sound.
Take Care, Tom B.
That's nothing! You need to hear THIS recording in five-channel mode, where the keyboard SURROUNDS you 270 degrees! ;-)
Chris,
I must admit, i won't even try it. I can't, as I listen to 2 channel only. I only own 2 speakers (left and right). Its the purist in me. And only until the past couple of months have I tried digital. I am a vinyl snob, but quickly moving towards digital. Mind you, I have been listening to youtube downloads in all its glorious compression and it still sounds good in some cases. I really am starting to like digital.
I know you will scream with horror and laughter on this question, but how much better is a good $1000 streaming device playing FLAC vs. my current ipod nano with youtube compressed music?
Do you have any 2 channel recommendations?
Pat
