Larry Coryell renown guitarist has passed. Post Weather Report, Chick Corea fashioned a Jazz fusion group, Return To Forever. This group had Coryell on electric guitar, Stanley Clarke on electric Bass, Lenny white on drums, and Chick Corea on electric keyboards. This was a hard hitting high energy group. Coryell was implemental in bridging this Jazz to rock collaboration.
I lost contact with Coryell's work shortly after the break up of Return to Forever. However, the mention of his name brings back fond memories of rock like Jazz concerts.

Follow Ups:
I have a half dozen of his solo albums, but who could keep up (or afford to keep up)? He released around 60 albums!
And of course, with that kind of quantity, you get variable quality. But I really liked the super-trio music, with him, McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia. Now only McLaughlin is left, and he's 75.

The guitarist in Return to Forever was Al Di Meola. Coryell's fusion band was Eleventh House.
But your main point is correct: Coryell was an important force in the fusion of jazz and rock in the early 70s.
Happy listening,
Jim

You are correct about the Coryell and DiMeola. My apology to the asylum.
I will attribute my error to far too many herbs and spices and high wattage concerts.

A great one! R.I.P.
