I was listening to Blues in Trinity by Dizzy Reece (BN 4006) today and found myself particularly enjoying the playing of Tubby Hayes. I noticed that Classic has released his album Tubby the Tenor. Does anyone own this pressing (or any other release of the title) and have opinions on whether its worth the not so small $30 price tag? CDNOW listed Tubby Hayes on Flute, Sax (Tenor), Vibraphone. Is this realy the case? I'd much rather listen to tenor sax than flute so this could be an issue. I'm also open to a different Tubby Hayes suggestion if anyone has one (cd or lp).
Thanks for any suggestions.Nathan P.
I checked the Penguin Guide. They have 7 of Hayes cds as a leader, all seem to be in print and all unknown to me. Perhaps his best dates were with the US musicans as a sideman...
He also played on one of Rahsaan's records, which one I don't seem to recall now. It's in the Complete Mercury box.
Sony/Columbia released a *great* Tubby Hayes disc in late 80s/early 90s,
which I still have somewhere and still play once in a while. It is
probably out of print by now, but would be worth looking for.Mike
I can only speak from the cd aspect of things and I'm not sure if any other cds of him are in print. He was English and didn't record much in the States. Can't advise you about the lp, but I'm sure someone will step in to help. Since he was a Brit there's got to be something that will shed some light in the Penguin Guide.
