. . . the Vaclav Neumann / LGO performance with Grace Bumbry on Berlin Classics has a fervency combined with an unmannered refinement that I expect will never again be equaled. I used to have the LP incarnation of this performance when it was available on EMI/Angel.
BTW, I notice that, in contrast to many of the Handel operas and oratorios, there still remains a fair number of non-HIP recordings besides this Neumann version (Fasano, Richter, Muti. . . ) of Gluck's masterpiece.
For the 1774 Paris version, I'd recommend an oldie but a goodie: the Rosbaud/Lamoureux recording Simoneau on Philips - I remember the SQ as pretty dull (it's pre-stereo AFAIR), but Simoneau was made to sing this role!
Follow Ups:
While we agree on the original Paris edition(little to chose from)...
Von Otter, Hendricks, Berlioz and Gardiner all on one CD!
What's not to like? ;-)
