On January 8th at the age of 91 from a slipped disc. We should all be so grateful that he lived a long and full life and blessed us with a large discography to remember him.

R.I.P.
He was ubiquitous at one time, but what would we consider his signature roles these days? I actually can't think, off hand, of a single role where he would be the preferred tenor, or not even a top 3. This feels odd to me, given his reputation, but he was singing at a time when we had a large number of tenors covering the same roles. Di Stefano, Bjorling, Bergonzi, del Monaco, Vickers (before he became almost purely heroic), Pavarotti, Wunderlich, Domingo, etc. In my collection, I think I might have a collaboration with Callas, and then his performance of Benvenuto Cellini.
He also premiered and recorded (for RCA) the role of Anatol in Barber's "Vanessa."
But I have his recording with Freni of La Boheme. I find it pretty satisfying. Conducted by Schippers on EMI. I also have Freni/Pavarotti/Karajan but I prefer this one. My favorite though is Gheorghiu/Alagna/Chailly.
In all my years of collecting Opera if I saw his name on an album cover, no matter if Florence Jenkins was the Soprano, I made it mine.
