we could stop demeaning artists with the "babe" moniker? Just a thought.

"Perhaps after a tragedy like this...we could stop demeaning artists with the "babe" moniker? Just a thought."
How rude and selfish of you to try and hijack this thread to promote your PC ideas and try to manipulate the behavior of forum members.
I have a CD by Ursuleasa that I've enjoyed since 2011. Tell the truth, befoe this thread did you even know who she was? Ever heard her play?
But it's quite obviously meant to put these artists "in their place".
To me it says, "Attain as high a position in your profession as you can, but what really matters is your sexual attractiveness." It's not something that tends to be done to revered male artists.
That being a place of admiration for both their talent, artistry and physical beauty? The horror! Wow that is demeaning. Thanks for bringing it all to light for me.
I believe that those who qualify as babes don't mind being called that. So, until someone does a babe survey of babe, the word, I'll go with my belief. By the way, have you heard the latest babe pianist release by Valentina Lisitsa? Awesome!

How do you know that they don't mind?
Alan
use of the term babe in this context seems uncivil. It isn't funny at all, and somehow it doesn't show much respect for this woman whose life has ended so shockingly.
Any other time, you can make your little joke and we might enjoy it.
Peace,
Tom E
. . . it seems you and Daverz (and others) are exploiting this tragedy to try to enforce your own notions of propriety, political correctness, or whatever it is on others.
Neither of you have provided a single example of a (excuse me) babe musician who seems at all to be offended by use of the term. In fact, it's just the opposite: the Dutch documentary on Janine Jansen emphasized how much of her schedule is devoted to photo shoots and the like. If she weren't exploiting her own "babe" status, why would she be devoting so much time to it? And JJ is by no means the only one who operates her career in this manner.
I am not exploiting or enforcing anything. You can call celebrities whatever you want. Honestly, I really don't care what you call anyone while they're alive, but most decent people behave with a certain decorum when discussing the dead, especially in a tragic case such as this. There is a time and a place for your little "babe" joke, and many of us enjoy it, but announcing a death is certainly not the proper time for it.
This is not about PC or controlling free speech; it's about showing respect for a life lost too soon and suddenly.
You're right that I can't provide a single example that dead musicians are offended by what you call them.
Regards,
Tom E
When one assumes that calling an attractive person a babe is universally disrespectful then it absolutely is about being PC.
I was referring only to the dead person, specifically to the announcement of her death. I never wrote one word about universal disrespect; in fact, quite the opposite. You're the one doing the assuming, and it's absolutely incorrect. Did you even read the entire post?
Although I think it was perfectly clear, can you read a little more carefully before responding with accusatory nonsense?

In that post you said the following "I really don't care what you call anyone while they're alive, but most decent people behave with a certain decorum when discussing the dead, especially in a tragic case such as this." There is a presumption on your part that everyone agrees with you that using the term babe when speaking of the recently departed is disrespectful (universal disrespect). No doubt this is all about being PC since clearly Chris meant no disrespect towards anyone. You do understand that the certain decorum you speak of is all about being PC since there was no *actual* disrespect felt or intended by Chris?

I doubt that any of these musicians have ever even heard of audio asylum.

Herbie von K totally rocks!
Babe is generally the slang term of endearment according to Wikepedia. However in todays politically correct world referring to a woman as babe is usually perceived as a negative reference. Chris, it is not the point that you don't find the term demeaning but rather do women find it so.

What you think of the term is not relevant, as has been said it is what women think of the term. There are any number of demeaning terms used by some persons who are not offended by the term nor are their peers. Only the injured party is offended.Using such a term where one is offended could well lead to bodily harm in some face-to-face encounters. So, a little sensitivity for others would be appreciated by me and any number of others here at the Asylum. It is not a matter of political correctness as much as that of common courtesy to your fellow human beings.
I take a leap of faith that you are a part of the later genus.
I have had the good fortune of spending considerable time in Romania, and for them to loose such a talent is a loss to country and to us - the human beings.

should a classical artist/babe ever kick my ass because I call her a babe or something similar I will concede the point.
Dave, I don't know what part of the world you're from, but for me, that just doesn't even pass the giggle test. Would you care to explain exactly how that works?
I am not making specific reference to the term babe, but any number of other insults. Many of these that lean to ethnic, racial, and nationality in many quarters of the good ole USA will yield a good old fashioned a-whipping, if not worse. There are some sexual slurs that will get you slapped at a minimum universally in the English speaking countries.
So, you can hide behind your computer and intellectually argue your point, but this asylum is just a small portion of the real world.
Lions, tigers, and bears - oh my! And there are sculpted 250 pound 6 foot plus persons that will take you to task.

What is the the reservation in calling an attractive female performer - woman? Why must a diminutive term be used?

"I am not making specific reference to the term babe"
Excellent - I'm very happy about that. So you just wanted to get in a couple of innuendos instead ("other insults. . . that lean to ethnic, racial, and nationality")?
But you couldn't stop there with the innuendos ("some sexual slurs that will get you slapped"). So are you claiming that "babe" is a sexual slur or not? Be careful when answering - "babe" is a term that some women use for guys too. And as far as I can tell, it's a term of admiration. And whether they use it, or I (and others on this forum) use it, there's nothing diminutive about it, except in minds of petty enforcers of their own narrow brand of propriety.
Today as i was walking down the street this drop dead gorgeous woman called me, yes me, a babe! So I punched her in the nose.

My apologies to all regarding all the white space. I had a 15-pound "Babe" handed to me as I was finishing up the post. I guess I proved the last phrase of my post. Getting all that white space in my post, now, that took breeding.
Yes Nadira, the 15-pound babe, wouldn't take umbrage to the term at nine months of age.
