I assumed it was a pickup group. Do you have different information?
The notes say recorded in Manhattan 1957 and 1960. Doubtful they would import the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, for instance. Still The NY Phil was Columbia then, no?
The pickup orchestra was comprised of members of the NY Phil? Or who? How exactly did/does a pickup orchestra work?
A pickup orchestra is put together by an orchestra contractor for a specific occasion. The musicians are members of the local pool of freelancers, or sometimes they may moonlight from other groups that play together regularly.
Some examples of pickup groups are the Columbia Symphony conducted by Bruno Walter (composed of Hollywood/LA freelancers) and recordings by Leopold Stokowski and "His" Symphony Orchestra. On the other hand, the Columbia Symphony conducted by George Szell that accompanies Casadesus in various Mozart concerti is NOT a pickup group--it's the Cleveland Orchestra using a different name because the orchestra had an exclusive contract with another label at the time.
