The Kaplan edition just arrived and I love it: the full score in scripture, the piano roll recordings, the interviews, the booklet and the performance itself is also very good, better than I could imagine: tempi are familiar but the definition within the orchestra is wonderful in comparison with other recordings - every note is sacred.
I especially loved the fast attaque of the double-bass in the first part, it just made me think it's like it ought to be...Thanks for the recommendation,
Rob
Mahler's conductiong style - inherited from Wagner - and the ruling style of the day (quite unlike what the charlatan period phonies are SELLING to the uninformed), was diametrically opposed to the one practiced in our time, including Kaplan's. While I too appreciate his mission, no one should be fooled into thinking that this is the way Mahler was performed when Mahler lived, that Mahler perform Mahler in this way, or that
it is THE geniune, period-true performance tradition. For THAT you must turn to Mengleberg - next to Nikisch, the greatest of them all and THE REAL DEAL.
One thing you have probably noticed by now and which I forgot to mention before is the generous number of tracks to make it easy to locate particular sections in the movements. Along with the additional materials included with the set, it makes it a good recording to use for serious study of the symphony.
Indeed, I'm feeling kind of a Kaplan right now. Listening to music which I must have heard thousand times, but now with a partitura in front of me...
I love it!
I am happy that it pleases you!
