I'm interested in finding out who some of the latter day oud players might be. I have a little of this and that on CD, Radio Tarifa and the like but not a lot.
Not so much interested in the old folk music - got plenty - but more the guys who might be considered the (for instance) Stevie Ray, Eric Clapton, Al DiMeola types. I know of Trilok Gurtu in his genre, India has Shankar (don't have) Shakti, et al, but there needs to be some players in my collection that find their influences in N. Africa and the Middle East - players that don't exist in my collection now.
Anybody who has suggestions please gettem posted here if you would.thanks

i listen to a ton of guitar players, my favorites being vai, hedges, satriani, mclaughlin, paco, hendrix, scofield, etc.I have to say that anour brahim is probably one of my favorite musicians, right up there with any of the guitar players mentione
for strictly solo oud, check out his cd barzakh. good stuff. that was the first one that i tried, a friend gave it to me.
after that one i bought astracan cafe, and it is quite different from barzakh, but it is wonderful music. after i bought this one i bought the rest of his catalog and i can say that he is one of the finest songwriters out there.

Don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining.
They have some really powerful stuff. Don't know if it's too traditional for what you're looking for buth it's great.
