I had guessed Chubby Jackson for #4 and #5, and Teddy Wilson on #3, but Kava arrived first hahaha. It's not that I can recognize Chubby for his playing, I'm not that good, but there weren't many bassist leading bands those years.#1 sounded to me like Lester, and Kava confirmed it. Pianist sounds familiar, but don't know.
#2 Not sure at all so I better save wild guesses
#3 Teddy on piano, maybe Coleman Hawkins on tenor and possibly Jo Jones on drums.
On #4 I suppose the trombone is JJ Johnson and tenorman could be a young Zoot Sims. The trumpet has things that reminds Dizzy, but it's not him, and I doubt he's Harry Edison.
For #5 we know Chubby on bass. Is Conte Candoli on trumpet? I know they played together, but I don't think there was a vibist at their dates...
Yes, that's Conte Candoli on trumpet on #5, and Hawk on tenor on #3. The other new names you've put out there are not correct, but I don't think I would have got Candoli myself in any test. I should have said less about the last two, it didn't occur to me that mentioning the bass player was the leader would give it away so quickly. It's nice to see guys getting to be so good at this, you and Chapra in particular.

Sometimes one is lucky ;-) My other candidates for the bass leader tracks were Jimmy Blanton, but he never recorded as a leader, and Milt Hinton, so the safest bet was Chubby Jackson and moreover Kava got it right at first shot hahaha. That gave me the clue for Candoli. I like his clear tone and kind of "easy flowing" melody lines, probably not to spot him blindly, but this time I had the help of the leader bassist. I knew that Candoli recorded for Prestige with Jackson. That might help others more knowledgeable to hit the tenor and drummer. I still wonder who can be the vibes player.I'm enjoying this a lot Duane, this set's been great too. Thanks!
Red Norvo. Quite a few terrific trumpets played with Woody. Pete & Conti Candoli, Sonny Berman, Shorty Rogers, Bernoe Glow, Ernie Royal - so darned many possibilities.Howard McGhee played trumpet with Chubby as did Neal Hefti!

that Gibbs fella?

I suspected of him, that of the white vibist left not many options...

Sometimes I'd rather watch.
....bada-BOOM!I knew you would hear this stuff very easily. It's cool to have others offering clues. I wonder how many folks would have got Chubby Jackson figured out, just as one example. I don't think it would be hard for you to find another record by this same band and get it by me without me figuring it out if *I* didn't get that clue at the same time. The associations with Woody suggested by several here were a revelation of the obvious to me. Maybe that's because I don't have any of Herman's full-band personnel even close to memorizedm, I don't know....gotta go.
dh
I got his big and small band stuff, at least some of them. On the big band he used two bass players so he could chearlead more. He seemed to always play at the higher register of the bass, I guess it was easier for him. He always had great cats in his bands.
The vibes player is more than likely a white cat but there I go....I said I wouldn't get involved. With Chubby you got to think Woody Herman and some white cats except maybe for the trumpet on #5 (I think). The trombone player would probably be a white cat also. I may be off-bass with these but we shall see.
The Jackson/Candoli thing was actually recorded for a small label called Rainbow Records. Nothing wrong with using contextual clues to figure out who the others are. That's how you make EDUCATED guesses :-).

Lester; #2 Has to be Hawk; and #3 Just has to be Chu Berry with ol' TW on pie-anna
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
Lester is on #1. Not Hawk on 2, nor Chu on #3, but the pie-annist is Teddy Wilson on 3.

back to the drawing board.

Skunked no more! How'd you know?

Charlie Christian tune that Chubby did, I think people might be surprised who the tenor is with Teddy and I have some of these things, if not on record but on tape. I might miss some but would probably be very close. After all, I saw a lot of these people!! I'm not bragging because I would sincerely love to have some of those years back to hear the future. In retrospect I'm somewhat sad. It really is a pleasure to hear these things again though.
...wherein he quotes someone else as having said "Life is like a sewer--what you get out of it depends upon what you put into it." May your water be as potable as the rest of ours.Time is a thief, and I guess most of us feel like we wish we could go back from time to time, but of course we can't. I can't tell you how many times over the years that I've felt like I was born 20 years or more too late. I really envy the list of folks you've been able to hear in your lifetime.

See, Tom Lehrer even brings back memories. He was part of a group of great story tellers although he did his telling like a troubador and a guy like Gene Shepherd told his stories verbally.Kava came up with a pretty good idea, at least I thought it was interesting. People could put some things on (at least I would put them on) that are musical selections that they themselves enjoy. Don't have to be no guessing game for this. Just stuff they like and might listen to just for themselves. Like I didn't think that you listened to Tom Lehrer but it's interesting to know now that you do, even if it's just occasionally---or maybe more often. He (Kava) mentioned things that you want if you were stuck on a desert island but I don't think it has to be that crucial. Everybody knows that I would stick Sonny R., Miles etc. in that mix. Other kinds of things like maybe a vocalist that you wouldn't submit for a blindfold or a Hank Williams tune. Yeah, could be interesting. Remember, I can't put Bartok's Concerto For Orchestra on....I could ask the same thing as a poll on the forum. Anybody got eyes?

I've had the same thought myself, but thought it was maybe a little too OT for your site. If you're game, I have a ton of non-jazz things I'd like to share that I think deserve wider attention. I promise not to dump the whole ton at once.BTW, I have three Lehrer albums, and they all crack me up. I only listen occasionally to them because they're not the kind of thing you want to listen to TOO many times, and also because my "to listen" pile of new stuff is getting bigger all the time.

I got some things that might be important to me but other people may not dig it but that's the point!
#4 has a real Herman influence that triggered some thoughts. Plus - just how many Bass player/leaders were there? Sure didn't sould like John Kirby and really didn't sound like Mingus. (He'd be too young anyway?)

would have made mincemeat of many of these. Ol' Dad amongst his rubble circa 1956. The first five years he was on radio, he taped his show right there in the living room.Out of view (but in my gallery) is the single Altec 604C

Your picture brought back memories. It was part of the sound system for the Griffith Planetarium in Los Angeles where I worked for a few years starting in the late '50s. There were several vinyl collectors on the staff, and I remember being shown how to set the equalization switches for various record labels and particular recordings. We used classical music at several places in the show, and I still associate certain pieces of music that we used with parts of the night such as sunset and sunrise. "Sunrise" from Daphnis and Chloe worked extremely well for the dawn and sunrise, and people would often come up aftwerward wanting to know what that piece of music was.
I remember when our house was full of smoke because my parents both smoked. We hardly noticed. How times have changed.
My ex would have freaked out if I had that setup in the living room. He looks like an audiophile too.
good ol' Pall Mall.

I have a Fisher tuner of similar vintage that looks just like the tuner in the upper left of the cabinet there. I'll have to show my wife that one to make my own rubble pile look neat and organized by comparison!

a Fisher but I only remember the RC

I think that is an older (1950's) Fisher Am/FM mono tuner -- R-30S maybe (saw a pic online that was very similar).Very cool pirate radio setup though!
Hifi's in your blood man!
Actually - he made the tapes at home and drove them to the radio station
