The recordings in the Orginal Jackets are NOT remastered. While the box says "DSD," that is becuase the DSD transfer of the 3rd from the SACD was used. For the rest of the symphonies, not only do the liner notes indicate that the remastering was done by the same people who did the Essential Classics release, but if you compare the Original Jackets to the Essential Classics releases, the sound is identical. I'm sorry to say, but you could have saved a lot of money just buying the EC release.

Follow Ups:
I assume that the issue on CD is a digital remastering of the original LP's. I didn't buy the set for the "DSD" thingy. I never collected the cycle on the cheezy looking Essential Classics budget line. I paid very little for the set through BMG, the packaging is SUPERB (great photos, original Liner Notes, etc.) -- vastly superior to the budget series as a library addition. The sound quality of the recordings is adequate. I do miss the PC's though. Now, if you're suggesting that I purchase THOSE in the Essential Classics series, I may take you up on it!:-)

Yeah Essential Classics looks cheesy, but it contains many many great recordings for cheap, and each disc was packed with as much music as possible. Liner notes are also typically pretty good.

I have several in the series that I bought for the music that was unavailable elsewhere...they're more than adequate. That said, and I'll give you an example of my personality here(:-), I used to have Uchida's Mozart Sonatas in that CHEEZY "Mozart Edition" mega-set -- you know, the one with the puppets and dollhouses on the covers -- and I WINCED every time I took it off the shelves! I replaced it ASAP with the slimline box when it came out. I don't mind BUDGET when it's done right (take LSO Live for example, or even most recent Naxos releases (such as the American Composers series, where they added some color and graphics to the printed materials accompanying the CD's...elegant). Sometimes, though, you just gotta settle down. Recently, I pulled out a budget DG recording of the Karajan Brahms Symphonies 2 & 3. It has NO LINER NOTES -- Ewwwww! The sound quality, however, is simply outstanding. I won't be replacing it, I've got liner notes with other versions. Now, about those sets (for example, the very fine recent spate of DG Mono reissues of great vocalists such as Streich and Hotter) that DON'T INCLUDE TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS. I don't want to buy them for that reason! I'll spend a little more to get those finishing touches...
