Though late to the um, party on this topic, I have actually found something on which we are in complete agreement. :)Appalachian Spring was one of the first classical pieces I took a liking to when I was 18. My wife skated to some excerpts from it.
There are some who take vehement exception with the notion that Copland was by far America's greatest composer. In my own house lives a traitor who is stuck on Gershwin. And I must admit a liking for most of his serious music and a lot of his pop songs. Porgy and Bess is by far the best opera written by an American. But he just didn't write enough serious music (the only one I can think of that I don't like is Cuban rhapsody, maybe I'll give it another listen.) Copland may not be at the top of all composers and doesn't rank with the likes of the three Bs, Mendelssohn, Dvorak etc. but he is still very fine and at the top of the heap in the USA. Perhaps America will produce greater composers in the 21st and 22nd century. It's still a young country.

I find it tasty in a Leonard Bernstein kind of way.
to "America's greatest composer". For me, anyway, that would be Samuel Barber. His Sym 1, Cello Concerto, Violin Concerto, various "short works" for orchestra and Songs are at the absolute top of my "American List". Just an opinion (with an exception, perhaps, needing to be made for the weepy "Adagio"), but I find his music less "hokey" than Copland...a little more urbane.

Adagio for strings is America's official crying song. BBC ran a series called "Masterpiece" and I was a amazed that people from all over the world were making incredible comments about this piece. Like most people (I'd guess) I don't know much about Barber's other music and I probably should. It's interesting when you express an opinion, any opinion, whether informed or otherwise, there is always someone who will jump all over you. I don't know if it's because they just disagree with your opinion or because they don't like the idea of anyone expressing any opinion, especially a strong opinion, about anything. When that happens, they are fair game in my book. Glad to see you're not one of them SE and the guy who jumped off the deep end the last time I threw this out seems to be much more self controlled this time, that or he is on vacation or his comuter broke or something. (Maybe he's in the hospital recovering from a bar room brawl over an arguement about which is the best color. hehehehehehe.)
